The Cubs announced Tuesday the team released OF Ryan Sweeney. The Cubs designated Ryan Sweeney for assignment Sunday prior to submitting the first roster of the season. Sweeney struggled in Spring Training and was outplayed by Matt Szczur. The team also decided to begin the year with an extra infielder, selected the contract of Jonathan Herrera and added him to the 40-man roster. The Cubs finalized the first roster of the season Sunday afternoon. Matt Szczur made the team’s Opening Day roster and will be joined on the Cubs’ bench by INF Jonathan Herrera. The Cubs selected the contract of Jonathan Herrera and added him to the 40-man roster. The Cubs designated OF Ryan Sweeney for assignment. Countdown to Opening Night: 1 day Joe Maddon made it official before Friday night’s practice game against the Diamondbacks, Travis Wood made the rotation and Edwin Jackson would start the season in the bullpen. Countdown to Opening Night: 3 days Joe Maddon said Wednesday that he expects the team’s first roster of the season to be finalized by Friday. The Cubs made three spring roster cuts prior to Wednesday’s Cactus League finale. RHP Brian Schlitter, LHP Zac Rosscup and OF Junior Lake were optioned to Triple-A Iowa. One last weekend in Arizona for the Chicago Cubs and it’s going to be a busy three days for Maddon’s men. The Cubs host the White Sox this afternoon, Jason Hammel against Jeff Samardzija, then the spring roster will be split in two one more time.
