The Cubs' farm system received a boost this past week when Josh Vitters made his debut for the Peoria Chiefs. The rest of his week was not as good as his first game but at least the Cubs' top prospect is now in A ball. Sean Gallagher turned in a great start with 12 strikeouts and Randy Wells was returned to the Cubs' system after being taken by the Blue Jays in the Rule 5 Draft this past winter. Minor League Report – 04/18/08
The Iowa Cubs had a better week and so did the Tennessee Smokies. The Daytona Cubs lost three in a row before beating the Palm Beach Cardinals in 10 innings on Thursday, 1-0. Sean Gallagher had a good week, despite losing on Thursday night to New Orleans, 5-1. Gallagher gave up 3 runs on 7 hits in 6 2/3 innings. The Usual Prospects?
The Cubs farm system garnered a lot of attention last year and figures to have an impact once again this season. The manor in which Lou Piniella handled his young players last year had a ripple effect throughout the organization. Baseball America and Scout.com are two of the most well respected publications in the business and both recently released their new prospect guides for the upcoming season.
