According to a report from ESPN.com, Randy Johnson agreed to a 1-year deal with the San Francisco Giants on Friday. The Cubs were rumored to be interested in the Big Unit once they traded Jason Marquis and if they did not acquire Jake Peavy. Winter Meetings 2008: Dealing with a Deadline

Thursday is the final day of the Winter Meetings and Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he "should know Thursday whether the much-discussed terms are finally set" in the Jake Peavy discussions. Towers and Jim Hendry met for an hour and a half on Wednesday night according to Bruce Levine and the Union-Tribune described the talks on Wednesday as "the lengthiest of a process than began several weeks ago." Day two in Las Vegas saw the first of the big name free agents sign a new deal. Francisco Rodriguez agreed to a 3-year deal worth $37 million dollars with the Mets that includes a vesting option for a fourth year. K-Rod appears to have set the market and with him accepting a deal much lower than the 5-year, $75 million dollar deal he was reportedly looking for this winter, his deal with the Mets is also an indication of how much the economic crisis is affecting the game of baseball. The on again, off again talks between the Padres and Cubs over a certain former Cy Young Award winner was given a new twist on Tuesday morning after a report in the Chicago Sun-Times by Gordon Wittenmyer. Update - 11:58am C.T. - According to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs have agreed to terms on a 4-year deal with Ryan Dempster. The new contract is believed to be worth $52 million over 4 years. The Sun-Times also reported Jim Hendry "might still seek another starting pitcher, possibly free agent, Randy Johnson, despite additional pursuits of left-handed hitting." According to a report from Ken Rosenthal ,the Cubs are interested in signing free-agent southpaw Randy Johnson. Johnson filed for free agency on Thursday after he could not agree to a new contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The future Hall of Famer is five wins shy of 300 for his career and made $16 million dollars last season.
