The countdown to Lake Buena Vista has begun ... and the rumors and activity throughout baseball picked up after the long holiday weekend. Hendry Feels Good About Cubs Off-Season

Trucks loaded with the Cubs equipment depart on Tuesday from Wrigley Field for Fitch Park in Mesa ... pitchers and catchers report in eight days. According to a report in the Tribune, Jim Hendry feels "the club significantly improved" from a disappointing season a year ago. Hendry admitted, "We knew a couple of years ago this would be a year a lot of the contracts we did would restrict us." According to a report from the Tribune, the Cubs offered contracts to eight of their nine arbitration eligible players before Saturday's deadline. Day four of Baseball's Winter Meetings concluded shortly after the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday with Milton Bradley still on the Cubs' roster. According to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times on Monday, the Cubs acknowledged a potential fit with the Padres' current third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff. The Padres reportedly have been looking to move the free-swinging Kouzmanoff to make room for Chase Headley at third base.
