Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 07/22/13

July 22, 2013 12:30 am By Tom U. 2 Comments

“That’s Baseball” is usually the response when something out of the ordinary happens in the game we love, but even the most diehard fans couldn’t expect to see the declared tie Daytona experienced on Saturday. A slew of recently drafted pitchers have helped Boise to a seven game winning streak, while weather played havoc with both Daytona and Kane County. Tennessee and Iowa came back from All-Star break with mixed results. To see what else strange and unusual has happened, check out today’s … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 07/15/13

July 15, 2013 2:30 am By Tom U. 32 Comments

As the season moves into the second half, some stories remain the same. Kane County continues to struggle winning games while Tennessee and Daytona keep rolling along. Iowa is still hovering around .500, as are the AZL Cubs, but Boise found trouble winning north of the border. Pierce Johnson, Zach Cates and Matt Loosen led the D-Cubs’ pitching staff with three excellent outings while Ivan Pineyro made his debut with five scoreless innings. Chang-Yong Lim also made his D-Cubs’ debut and … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 07/01/13

July 1, 2013 12:30 am By Tom U. 29 Comments

As expected, the organization began shuffling players around the system this past week. Several players received promotions and recent draft picks made their pro debuts while one of the top prospects in the organization ended up on the disabled list. Meanwhile, Daytona kept their cool despite some head-hunting with both Javier Baez and Wes Darvill hitting big flies. Boise evened their record riding the bats of David Bote and Yasiel Balaguert. Iowa pushed their record over .500 on the pitching … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 06/27/13

June 27, 2013 2:18 am By Tom U. 30 Comments

New faces in new places marked the beginning of the week. Daytona continued to be the hottest team in the Cubs’ system. The D-Cubs improved to 5-1 in the second half and Pierce Johnson made his first High-A start. Jacob Hannemann is starting to flex his muscles for Boise, while P.J. Francescon helped win a marathon for Tennessee. Jae-Hoon Ha picked up Iowa’s only hit on Tuesday, while countryman Chang-Yong Lim debuted in Arizona. Two of the Cubs’ top prospects will participate in the upcoming … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 06/24/13

June 24, 2013 12:15 am By Tom U. 27 Comments

It was reported that sportswriter Ring Lardner would sing “I’m forever blowing ballgames” to the “Black Sox” during the storied World Series. That seemed to be an appropriate tune with the way the week ended down on the farm as losing leads ran rampant through the organization. Boise was powered by Yasiel Balaguert and Kevin Encarnacion as they went 2-2 to close out the week. Kane County continued to have a hard time with Quad Cities as they began their second half of the season by losing … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 06/13/13

June 13, 2013 12:05 am By Tom U. 12 Comments

All eyes seems to have turn to Daytona at the start of the week as Javier Baez looked to claim his spot as the top prospect in the system with a four home run night. The D-Cubs also showed off their speed by stealing ten straight bases in a doubleheader on Sunday. Kane County went into a three game nose dive, while Tennessee’s offense continued to sputter.  Iowa won two in a row with fine relief pitching from Eduardo Sanchez, Michael Bowden, and Casey Coleman. Along with recaps from the … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 06/03/13

June 3, 2013 12:20 am By Tom U. 40 Comments

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 06/03/13 It wasn’t a good end to the week as both Kane County and Iowa are on losing streaks while Tennessee had all sorts of problems in Birmingham. Daytona flexed their offensive muscles thanks to Javier Baez, Ben Carhart, Dustin Geiger, Chadd Krist, and Jorge Soler. Now, if the D-Cubs could only get their pitching on the same roll. For more details, take a look at Down on the Farm. … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 05/27/13

May 27, 2013 12:30 am By Tom U. 28 Comments

Happy Memorial Day from the CCO! No headline can be any bigger than the immediate splash made by Albert Almora at Kane County as the Cubs’ first round draft pick from a year ago has taken the Midwest League by storm. Almora’s start may be overshadowing a couple of his teammates as Rock Shoulders is now leading the league in home runs while Pierce Johnson is third in strikeouts and is pitching rather well for the Cougars. Speaking of league leaders, Daytona’s Dustin Geiger continues to lead the … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 05/23/13

May 23, 2013 12:09 am By Tom U. 9 Comments

Arrivals seem to be the big story to start this week as pitchers Jose Rosario and Kyler Burke returned to Kane County and Daytona respectively.  Albert Almora made his Kane County debut on Wednesday night and went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a RBI. Meanwhile, Tennessee suffered two last minute losses and Iowa rode the mighty bat of Brian Bogusevic to a doubleheader sweep.  These stories, along with a recap of the first week of the Venezuelan Summer League, are inside Down on the … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 05/20/13

May 20, 2013 12:30 am By Tom U. 30 Comments

As we near the Memorial Day sign post, Kane County, Daytona, and Tennessee have  improved their records to around .500, with only Iowa lagging behind. Rock Shoulders and Bijan Rademacher continue to be the compelling forces for the Cougars, while Matt Szczur, Christian Villanueva, and Rafael Lopez have stepped up their games for the Smokies. Iowa can’t seem to get the right combination of pitching and hitting, and serving notice in Daytona were Dustin Geiger and Jorge Soler. To find out more, … [Read more...]
