“That’s Baseball” is usually the response when something out of the ordinary happens in the game we love, but even the most diehard fans couldn’t expect to see the declared tie Daytona experienced on Saturday. A slew of recently drafted pitchers have helped Boise to a seven game winning streak, while weather played havoc with both Daytona and Kane County. Tennessee and Iowa came back from All-Star break with mixed results. To see what else strange and unusual has happened, check out today’s … [Read more...]

For the second straight week, four of the Cubs eight affiliates are in first place, and a fifth is in second place as both Iowa and Tennessee headed into their All-Star break. Iowa had marathon game on Sunday with a light’s out pitching performance from Jake Arrieta.  Boise saw the first start of second round draft pick Rob Zastryzny and went onto win three straight. Tennessee and Daytona maintained their first place standing, while Kane County actually won a game thanks to Willson … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 07/11/13

July 11, 2013 12:30 am By Tom U. 24 Comments

While the Boise Hawks slipped a little last week, four of the Cubs’ eight affiliates have stayed in first place. Iowa used some offensive explosion from Luis Flores and Logan Watkins.  Boise saw the debut of second round draft pick Rob Zastryzny, while Kane County and Tennessee struggled. But the big news to end this week once again came out of Daytona as the CCO’s preseason Pitcher of the Year Matt Loosen tossed a no-hitter for the D-Cubs. For more information, see what’s inside of this … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 06/24/13

June 24, 2013 12:15 am By Tom U. 27 Comments

It was reported that sportswriter Ring Lardner would sing “I’m forever blowing ballgames” to the “Black Sox” during the storied World Series. That seemed to be an appropriate tune with the way the week ended down on the farm as losing leads ran rampant through the organization. Boise was powered by Yasiel Balaguert and Kevin Encarnacion as they went 2-2 to close out the week. Kane County continued to have a hard time with Quad Cities as they began their second half of the season by losing … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 06/13/13

June 13, 2013 12:05 am By Tom U. 12 Comments

All eyes seems to have turn to Daytona at the start of the week as Javier Baez looked to claim his spot as the top prospect in the system with a four home run night. The D-Cubs also showed off their speed by stealing ten straight bases in a doubleheader on Sunday. Kane County went into a three game nose dive, while Tennessee’s offense continued to sputter.  Iowa won two in a row with fine relief pitching from Eduardo Sanchez, Michael Bowden, and Casey Coleman. Along with recaps from the … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 06/03/13 It wasn’t a good end to the week as both Kane County and Iowa are on losing streaks while Tennessee had all sorts of problems in Birmingham. Daytona flexed their offensive muscles thanks to Javier Baez, Ben Carhart, Dustin Geiger, Chadd Krist, and Jorge Soler. Now, if the D-Cubs could only get their pitching on the same roll. For more details, take a look at Down on the Farm. … [Read more...]

Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 05/30/13

May 30, 2013 12:30 am By Tom U. 28 Comments

The longball was the center of attention at the start of the week, as Iowa ended up getting them from unexpected sources in Edwin Maysonet and Donnie Murphy. Arismendy Alcantara continues to amaze in Tennessee as he hit his seventh longball of the season. Meanwhile, Kane County’s Dan Vogelbach got himself back on track by launching two big flies of his own. None may have been more important than one by Javier Baez, who helped Daytona win in walk-off fashion. To get the details, see what’s inside … [Read more...]
