Rizzo and Barney Finalists for Gold, Cubs Add Wedge to the Skipper Search and Other Notes

The starting right side of the Cubs’ infield this past season is finalists for a Rawlings Gold Glove. Anthony Rizzo and Darwin Barney are in the running for the defensive honor after excellent seasons in the field. Barney won his first Gold Glove a year ago and is up against the Reds’ Brandon Phillips and the Dodgers’ Mark Ellis this season. Cubs Interview Renteria, Martinez Excited about Opportunity

As expected, the Cubs interviewed Padres’ bench coach Rick Renteria for the managerial opening on Monday in California. Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer reportedly flew to San Diego to conduct sit down with Renteria, who is recovering from hip surgery. Renteria is expected to be fully recovered by Spring Training. The Cubs have already interviewed A.J. Hinch and Manny Acta for the skipper’s job and reportedly Rick Renteria is next in line for a meeting with the Cubs’ brass. Cubs Reportedly Prepared to Make Joe Girardi an Offer

Jon Heyman reported Wednesday night that Brian Cashman met with Joe Girardi and his agent, Steve Mandell, earlier in the day in New York and the Yankees’ GM made Girardi an offer to stay with the Yankees. According to Heyman’s report, Girardi countered with "some parameters" and the two sides agreed to meet again on Thursday.
