The Cubs’ skipper search is heating up and at some point next week the front office may be ready to name their new manager Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer reportedly met with the sixth managerial candidate on Friday at Wrigley Field. Epstein and Hoyer spent the day with Brad Ausmus and talked baseball with the former big league catcher. Reports should surface in the next couple of days that the Cubs have asked for and been granted permission from the Red Sox to interview Torey Lovullo. Mark Gonzales caught up with Ozzie Guillen prior to Game One of the World Series. The former Marlins and White Sox manager told Gonzales that "he would be willing to return as a coach, only with the Cubs, if asked." A day after Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer interviewed Dave Martinez at Wrigley Field, a report out of Dallas indicated the Cubs have asked the Rangers for permission to speak with Mike Maddux. As expected Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer interviewed Dave Martinez on Thursday and the two-time former Cub is looking to become the next manager of the team that drafted him in 1983. According to a report from Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, the Yankees will not grant the Cubs permission to talk to Joe Girardi about managing the team if they ask. According to multiple reports, the Cubs have fired Dale Sveum and he will not return to manage the Cubs in the final year of his three-year contract. While many will be focused on some large game in The Big Easy, as Matt Garza pointed out on Saturday it is one more week until the action starts in Mesa.
