September 6, 2016 12:15 am By Tom U. Leave a Comment

Cubs Top Prospect Watch For the final Watch of the season, the Cubs had some spirited play. Chesny Young raised his batting average by 10 points, did not strikeout in 30 at bats and won a batting title. Ian Happ finished with a flourish, clubbing three home runs, while Duane Underwood Jr. dominated in his first start with High-A Myrtle Beach. Dylan Cease saved his best for his last start of the regular season. Cease allowed one hit in five shutout innings with no walks and 10 … [Read more...]

Cubs Top Prospect Watch It was a good week Down on the Farm for a majority of the Cubs top prospects. Things remained rather quiet without any changes made to the Watch this past week, as the minors are set for their last full week of play. Dylan Cease and D.J. Wilson were still burning it up for the Eugene Emeralds, but Ian Happ and Chesny Young had a rough week. And today’s wild card is a real favorite of the CCO readers. Here then, is how the top prospects have fared this season, … [Read more...]

Cubs Top Prospect Watch After a long layoff, Duane Underwood Jr. returns to the Watch as he continues a rehab assignment with South Bend, while Eloy Jimenez returned from his own injuries after missing more than a week. Chesny Young is locked in a battle for the Southern League batting championship, which would be his second straight if he is able to win out. Oscar De La Cruz and Bryan Hudson stumbled, but today’s wild card has a candidate for Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Here … [Read more...]

July 28, 2016 1:00 pm By Neil Leave a Comment

MLB Pipeline’s Midseason Top 30 Cubs Prospects MLB Pipeline released its updated prospect lists for all 30 teams and the Cubs’ midseason list looks a lot different from the pre-season ranking. Willson Contreras is the No. 1 catching prospect in the game and, for now, is the top prospect in the Cubs’ system. C/OF Willson Contreras, 2B/OF Ian Happ, OF Eloy Jimenez, 3B Jeimer Candelario and RHP Dylan Cease are the top five prospects in the organization according to MLB Pipeline. The Cubs … [Read more...]

Cubs Top Prospect Watch – 07/26/16

Cubs Top Prospect Watch With the front office making two trades in last seven days to acquire Aroldis Chapman and Mike Montgomery, there was a major shake-up in this week’s Top Prospect Watch. The Cubs traded top prospects Gleyber Torres and Billy McKinney to the Yankees in the Chapman deal. And LHP Carson Sands landed on the disabled list. Catcher Miguel Amaya, pitcher Oscar De La Cruz and outfielder Mark Zagunis take the spots on the Top Prospect Watch previously occupied by Torres, … [Read more...]

Cubs Top Prospect Watch – 07/19/16

July 19, 2016 12:15 am By Tom U. Leave a Comment

Cubs Top Prospect Watch There were not any changes with the Top Prospect Watch this week. Concerns remain about Dylan Cease and Eloy Jimenez as two of the best young players in the system left games with injuries this past week. Gleyber Torres came within a home run of a cycle on Monday night as his stats for the season look better by the day. Torres has performed much better than most realize after a slow start to the season. Torres is hitting .337/.413/.474 with eight doubles, a triple … [Read more...]

Baseball America’s Midseason Top 10 Cubs Prospects

July 16, 2016 12:05 am By Neil Leave a Comment

Baseball America released its midseason ranking of the top 10 prospects in the Cubs’ system. And there is no longer a clear No. 1 prospect in the organization. Due to the excellent season Ian Happ has put together, first with High-A Myrtle Beach and now with Double-A Tennessee, Happ has closed the gap on Gleyber Torres for the title of the top prospect in the Cubs’ system. According to John Manuel, Gleyber Torres and Ian Happ “are prospects 1 and 1A.” Torres, Happ and Eloy Jimenez are … [Read more...]

Cubs Top Prospect Watch – 07/05/16

Cubs Top Prospect Watch There were no changes to this week’s Watch with rosters settling in for the holiday weekend. Eddy Julio Martinez has shown progress and Ian Happ is still on fire for the Tennessee Smokies. Cubs’ top prospect, 19-year old Gleyber Torres is making progress for High-A Myrtle Beach. His totals for the season look rather average but he’s shown steady improvement as he continues his development as one of the youngest players in the Carolina League. Torres started figuring … [Read more...]

Cubs Top Prospect Watch – 06/28/16

Cubs Top Prospect Watch Changes came to this week’s Watch, as we swapped our Wilson’s. With Willson Contreras now in the big leagues, outfielder D.J. Wilson takes his place in the Top Prospect Watch. And a recent promotion now places Ian Happ with the Tennessee Smokies. Happ is on fire at the plate and had another big night Monday. Billy McKinney has really turned his season around. Over his last 22 games with Double-A Tennessee, McKinney is batting .292/.393/.389 with five doubles and … [Read more...]
