The biggest Cubs’ rumor to come out of Orlando on the final day of the GM Meetings on Wednesday was courtesy of Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News. Feinsand reported the market on Jacoby Ellsbury looks thin and his source indicated "the Cubs are stealthily waiting in the wings." The final days of the minor league season are upon us, and Tennessee, behind a power surge from Javier Baez, has locked up a playoff spot in the Southern League. Daytona moved into the post-season in style after a combined No-Hitter on Tuesday locked up a division title. Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 08/12/13
The Cubs’ farm system went streaking at the end of the week. Kris Bryant ran his hitting streak to 15 games while the Boise Hawks won three games in a row. Iowa posted five consecutive victories and enjoyed a 13 game hit streak from Jae-Hoon Ha. Daytona broke their streak of being rained out as they got enough of a break in the weather to win two in a row. Kane County notched a couple of wins while Tennessee also won two out of three games. All eyes were on the Cubs’ system this week after two trades added more inventory and talent to the organization. Mike Olt, Justin Grimm and C.J. Edwards were acquired in the Matt Garza deal with Texas and each player made their organizational debuts. Justin Grimm struggled in his first start while Mike Olt is 2-for-19 in his first five games. As the season moves into the second half, some stories remain the same. Kane County continues to struggle winning games while Tennessee and Daytona keep rolling along. Iowa is still hovering around .500, as are the AZL Cubs, but Boise found trouble winning north of the border. Nothing could overshadow the big news out of the minors to end this week as Javier Baez was promoted to Double-A Tennessee. Pierce Johnson had his best start with the D-Cubs that helped keep Daytona on track.
