The Cubs announced four roster moves Wednesday morning. And one more roster move will have to be made prior to Wednesday’s finale with the Rockies. The Cubs placed RHP Neil Ramirez on the 15-day DL with left abdominal soreness. RHP Yoervis Medina was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to take his spot on the active roster. It was a pretty good start to the week for some pitchers from the 2014 draft class. Lefty Tommy Thorpe is not thriving in the rotation for South Bend, while Brad Markey was blowing hitters away for Myrtle Beach. Austyn Willis also had a good outing for the AZL Cubs, and Ryan Williams kept rolling for Tennessee. It was a rough middle of the week for the Cubs’ minor league affiliates. Several players kept producing at the plate and on the mound, but the overall win-loss record was not that good. The Cubs promoted first round pick OF/2B Ian Happ to South Bend. And Happ’s new teammate, Jeffrey Baez has not slowed down with the bat or on the bases. The ball continues to fly down on the farm. Eloy Jimenez went yard for Eugene while the reigning Midwest League Player of the Week, Jeffrey Baez, kept finding holes. After a big shakeup over the holiday weekend things seem to be settling in for the affiliates as Iowa is on a roll, winning three straight thanks to home runs from Junior Lake, Ryan Dent, Taylor Davis, Jonathan Mota, Matt Szczur, and Kyle Schwarber. Cubs Sign RHP Ben Rowen to Minor League Contract
The Iowa Cubs announced the Cubs signed RHP Ben Rowen to a minor league contract. Rowen has been assigned to the I-Cubs and was added to its active roster Sunday. According to the release, Ben Rowen opted out of his contract with the Baltimore Orioles on July 1 to sign with the Cubs. Rowen signed with the Dodgers in January and was traded by Los Angeles along with Chris O’Brien to the Orioles for Brian Ward, Ryan Webb and the Orioles competitive balance Round B pick in the 2015 draft.
