Cubs Reportedly Agree on a Deal with Free Agent Craig Kimbrel

June 5, 2019 7:51 pm By Neil Leave a Comment

Cubs agree to a contract with free agent closer RHP Craig Kimbrel

According to a report from Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs have agreed to terms with free agent right-hander Craig Kimbrel. The deal is pending a physical and has not been announced by the team.

Terms of the contract have not been reported. It is believed to be a multi-year deal according to Rosenthal.

Updated 8:30pm CDT – According to Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs have inked Kimbrel to a three-year worth close to $45 million contract. The deal will run through the 2021 season. Jon Heyman reported the deal is for three years, $43 million. No word yet on a possible signing bonus and/or how much he will be paid for the remainder of this season.

Updated 9:18pm CDT – According to multiple reports, Kimbrel’s contract includes a vesting option for a fourth year, the 2022 season. Kimbrel will be paid $10 million for this season, not pro-rated, $16 million in 2020 and 2021. If the option does not vest, it becomes a club option for the fourth year worth $16 million that includes a $1 million buyout to run the guaranteed contract to $43 million. Jeff Passan reported Kimbrel’s physical is Thursday and he could be activated before June 20.

Kimbrel could be ready to pitch in about a month according to Peter Gammons. Without a doubt, the Cubs will give a timeline for Kimbrel’s availability once the deal is made official.
