LHP Brian Duensing activated from 10-day DL … RHP Luke Farrell optioned to Triple-A Iowa

The Cubs activated left-handed pitcher Brian Duensing off of the 10-day disabled list prior to the first of three with the Padres in San Diego on Friday. Right-handed pitcher Luke Farrell has been optioned to Triple-A.

Brian Duensing, 35, was placed on the disabled list on July 1 with left shoulder fatigue. He made one rehab appearance with Double-A Tennessee as part of his return, retiring all three batters faced on 11 pitches on Tuesday versus Montgomery. With the Cubs this year, Duensing is 2-0 with one save and a 6.92 ERA (20 earned runs in 26 innings) in 35 relief appearances. Duensing had a 0.54 ERA (one earned run in 16 2/3 innings) in his first 23 outings through May 27 before allowing 19 earned runs in his next 9 1/3 innings covering 12 relief outings and being placed on the disabled list.

Luke Farrell, 27, is 3-3 with a 3.86 ERA (12 earned runs in 28 innings) in 19 appearances (one start) with the Cubs this season. Farrell is 0-2 with a 4.94 ERA (13 earned runs in 23 2/3 innings) in five starts with Iowa this year.
