Cubs select contract of RHP Anthony Bass … RHP Cory Mazzoni optioned to Triple-A Iowa … RHP Eddie Butler transferred to 60-Day disabled list

The Cubs made three roster moves prior to the start of the three-game series at Miller Park. The Cubs selected the contract of RHP Anthony Bass from Triple-A Iowa. Bass was added to the active roster. To make room for Bass on the 40-man roster, RHP Eddie Butler (right groin strain) was transferred to the 60-day DL. And to create a spot on the active roster for Bass, RHP Cory Mazzoni was optioned to Iowa.

The Cubs 40-man roster stands at 40 players.

Anthony Bass, who will wear uniform number 45, will be available for the Cubs ton Monday night as they begin a three-game series at Milwaukee.

Bass, 30, is 0-1 with three saves and a 2.28 ERA (six earned run in 23 2/3 innings) in 18 relief appearances with Iowa this season, his first in the Cubs organization. In his last 10 games since May 6, he has a 1.46 ERA (two earned runs in 12 1/3 innings) and has limited the opponent to a .599 OPS. Bass has struck out 20 batters, while walking just six, and has held right-handed batters to a .233 average (14-for-60) with no home runs this season.

Bass has pitched in parts of six major league seasons with the Padres (2011-13), Astros (2014) and Rangers (2015, 2017), going a combined 5-9 with three saves and a 4.60 ERA (145 earned runs in 284 innings) in 131 games, including 18 starts. He spent the 2016 campaign with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham-Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball before joining Texas last season, pitching primarily with Triple-A Round Rock while making two appearances with the Rangers.

Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2008 Draft by San Diego, Bass has gone 36-31 with 11 saves and a 3.55 ERA (233 earned runs in 590 2/3 innings) in 171-career minor league games, including 101 starts.

Cory Mazzoni, 28, is 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA (one earned in 7 2/3 innings) in seven relief outings with the Cubs. He has gone 3-2 with two saves and a 1.25 ERA (three earned runs in 21 2/3 innings) in 14 relief outings with Triple-A Iowa this season.
