Cubs reportedly talking to Orioles about shortstop/third baseman Manny Machado
With the Orioles on the South Side playing the White Sox this week, the Manny Machado to the Cubs rumors have dominated the headlines. While Joe Maddon’s team searches for consistency, every mainstream news outlet has done its best to link Machado to the Cubs.
Machado is one of the best offensive players in the game. Right now, the Cubs are struggling in just about every facet of the game. And if the rotation does not start doing its job soon, the bullpen is going to be out of gas before the non-waiver trade deadline.
The Orioles have not received an offer the ownership or front office likes yet for Machado. Even with holding him too long, the O’s are not backing off the asking price. The soon-to-be free agent is putting up excellent numbers at the plate while holding his own in the field.
According to George Ofman, the Orioles “could be seeking” a package of players from the Cubs that would include several of the players left with value in the system.
Ofman explained the Orioles “would want some of the players.” Off the Major League roster, Addison Russell would likely have to be included. Ofman does not know whether or not Ian Happ would be in a possible deal for Machado. From the prospect list, the pitchers that could be in the discussions include RHP Adbert Alzolay, RHP Oscar De La Cruz, RHP Alex Lange, LHP Brendon Little and RHP Jose Albertos.
The Orioles will want pitching in any deal for Machado and it is unclear at this point if LHP Mike Montgomery is still part of the discussions between the two teams.
Stay tuned … the rumors are just beginning with the Memorial Day Weekend quickly approaching.
