Cubs recall RHP Cory Mazzoni from Triple-A Iowa … Option RHP Luke Farrell to I-Cubs
Prior to the first of three against the Marlins, the Cubs made two roster moves to try and help the worn out bullpen. RHP Luke Farrell, who was hung with two of the three losses over the weekend in St. Louis, was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs recalled right-handed reliever Cory Mazzoni to take the open spot in the bullpen.
The Cubs are struggling, as Theo Epstein said Monday afternoon, in all facets of the game. And due to the marathon on Sunday night and lack of innings from the starting staff, the Cubs had to switch out bullpen arms.
Cory Mazzoni, who will wear uniform number 60, will be available for the Cubs when they play their series opener against the Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field.
Mazzoni, 28, has gone 0-2 with a 2.31 ERA (three earned runs in 11 2/3 innings) and a 1.45 WHIP in eight relief appearances for Iowa this season. He has struck out 12, walked one batter and allowed 16 hits this year. Mazzoni was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Nov. 6, 2017 from the San Diego Padres, was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 27 and claimed off waivers again by the Cubs on March 29.
Mazzoni has appeared in 14 big league games, all in relief, with the Padres (2015, 2017), posting no record, a 17.28 ERA (32 earned runs in 16 2/3 innings) and a 2.94 WHIP.
Overall, Mazzoni is 27-17 with seven saves, a 3.74 ERA (157 earned runs in 377 2/3 innings) and a 1.25 WHIP in 124 career minor league appearances, 53 as a starter. He spent most of the 2017 campaign in the minors, combining to go 2-0 with one save, a 0.59 ERA (two earned runs in 30 1/3 innings) and a 0.911 WHIP in 23 relief appearances. He struck out 48 batters and walked three while allowing 31 hits. Mazzoni made 14 appearances with Triple-A El Paso, going 1-0 with one save, a 0.89 ERA ( two earned runs in 20 1/3 innings) and a 1.03 WHIP.
Mazzoni is a native of Evans City, Penn. and was originally selected by the New York Mets in the second round of the 2011 Draft out of North Carolina State University.
