Cubs place RHP Carl Edwards Jr. on the 10-day with right shoulder inflammation … RHP Cory Mazzoni recalled from Triple-A Iowa
The Cubs placed right-handed pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation on Wednesday afternoon and recalled right-handed pitcher Cory Mazzoni from Triple-A Iowa.
Mazzoni will be available for the Cubs in the finale of three three-game series with the Pirates at PNC Park.
According to reports, Edwards Jr. felt discomfort on Tuesday night and was not able to go back out for a second inning of work. Edwards Jr. left the team and had an MRI on Wednesday in Chicago.
Edwards Jr., 26, is 2-1 with nine holds, a 2.88 ERA (eight earned runs in 25 innings) and a 1.20 WHIP in 25 relief outings with the Cubs. Edwards Jr. has walked 12 batters with 40 strikeouts as Maddon’s main setup man to Brandon Morrow.
With Edwards Jr. on the DL, RHP Pedro Strop and LHP Justin Wilson are expected to get a majority of the work in the eighth inning when the Cubs have a lead.
Cory Mazzoni, 28, has gone 3-2 with a 1.25 ERA (three earned runs in 21 2/3 innings) in 14 relief appearances with Iowa this season, striking out 22 batters while walking five. He has not allowed an earned run in his last eight games (14 innings).
Mazzoni was previously recalled by the Cubs May 7 and threw a scoreless inning of relief against the Marlins before being optioned back to Iowa following the game. He made 14 Major League relief appearances with San Diego (2015, 2017), posting no record and a 17.28 ERA (32 earned runs in 16 2/3 innings).
Overall, Mazzoni is 30-17 with nine saves and a 3.64 ERA (157 earned runs in 387 2/3 innings) in 130 career minor league appearances, 53 as a starter. Mazzoni was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Nov. 6, 2017 from the San Diego Padres, was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 27 and claimed off waivers again by the Cubs on March 29.
Mazzoni is a native of Evans City, Penn. and was originally selected by the New York Mets in the second round of the 2011 Draft out of North Carolina State University.
