Cubs announced signing of RHP Steve Cishek to two-year contract
The Cubs made it official on Saturday as the team announced the signing of right-handed reliever Steve Cishek to a two-year deal. According to multiple reports, Cishek’s deal is for two-years and $13 million and it includes an incentives package based on appearances.
With the addition of Steve Cishek, the Cubs’ 40-man roster stands at 38 players.
Steve Cishek, 31, combined to go 3-2 with 16 holds, one save, a 2.01 ERA (10 earned runs in 44 2/3 innings) and a 0.89 WHIP in 49 relief appearances for the Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays last season. He began the season with the Mariners, posting a 3.15 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in 23 outings, before being traded to Tampa Bay on July 28 and posting a 1.09 ERA with a 0.81 WHIP in 26 outings the rest of the way.
Last season, Cishek turned in a 0.89 WHIP and walked only 14 batters while striking out 41. He limited opponents to a .167 batting average, including a .208 mark by left-handed hitters and a .148 mark by righties, while his .491 opponent OPS was the fourth-lowest mark in the American League by any pitcher with at least 40 appearances.
Cishek broke into the majors with the Marlins in 2010 and surpassed 30 saves in both 2013 and 2014, ranking sixth in the National League with 34 saves in 2013 and fifth in the N.L. with a career-high 39 saves in 2014. He was traded to St. Louis midway through the 2015 campaign, posting a 2.31 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP in 27 relief outings to help the Cardinals to the division title, and pitched the last two seasons in the American League, recording 25 saves as Seattle’s closer in 2016.
The 6-foot-6, 215-pound Cishek is 24-28 with 47 holds, 121 saves, a 2.73 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in 422 major league appearances, all in relief, covering all or part of eight seasons with the Marlins (2010-15), Cardinals (2015), Mariners (2016-17) and Rays (2017). He has struck out 449 batters in 421 2/3 innings innings pitched, an average of 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings, while limiting foes to a .217 batting average.
Steve Cishek, a native of Falmouth, Mass., was originally selected by the Marlins in the fifth round of the 2007 Draft out of Carson-Newman College.
