Cubs recall RHP Felix Pena from Triple-A Iowa … Option INF Tommy La Stella to Iowa Cubs
The Cubs announced two roster moves prior to Saturday’s game against the Cardinals. The Cubs recalled RHP Felix Pena from the I-Cubs. To make room on the active roster for Pena, INF Tommy La Stella was sent down to Triple-A Iowa.
The Cubs roster stands at 13 pitchers (four starters, nine relievers) and 12 position players.
The Cubs officially moved LHP Mike Montgomery to the bullpen and announced RHP Kyle Hendricks will come off the DL for the start of the White Sox series on Monday at Wrigley Field. The Cubs will have to make another change to the roster Monday prior to the first of four with the Southsiders.
Felix Pena joins the Cubs for the fourth time this season, as he is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA (eight earned runs in 16 innings) and 1.56 WHIP in 10 relief outings during his previous big league stints. Pena is 1-1 with five saves, a 6.94 ERA (18 earned runs in 23 1/3 innings) and 1.80 WHIP in 17 relief appearances with Iowa this season, striking out 22 batters in 23 1/3 innings. Pena made his big league debut with the Cubs last year and overall is 1-0 with a 4.32 ERA (12 earned runs in 25 innings) and 1.32 WHIP in 21 career Major League relief outings.
Tommy La Stella, 28, is batting .298/.414/.509 (17-for-57) with six doubles, two homers and a .923 OPS in 37 games with the Cubs this season. With Iowa, La Stella is batting .213/.265/.266 (20-for-94) with two doubles, one homer and a .531 OPS in 26 games.
