Cubs place RHP Kyle Hendricks on 10-day DL … Select contract of RHP Seth Frankoff … Transfer LHP Brett Anderson to 60-day disabled list
Prior to Thursday’s game with the Rockies, the Cubs placed right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to June 5) with tendinitis in his right hand and selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Seth Frankoff from Triple-A Iowa.
Frankoff, who will wear uniform number 43, joins the first Major League roster of his career and will be available for the Cubs as they begin their four-game series against the Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field.
To make room for Frankoff on the 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Seth Frankoff, 28, is 1-2 with a 2.77 ERA (17 earned runs in 55 1/3 innings) and a 0.94 WHIP in 11 appearances (nine starts) with Iowa this season. He has limited opponents to a .186 batting average. Frankoff has struck out 59 batters and walked 15, an average of 9.6 strikeouts and 2.4 walks per nine innings. He signed a minor league contract with the Cubs last offseason and was an invite to Major League Spring Training.
The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder is 26-27 with 29 saves, a 3.58 ERA (229 earned runs in 575 2/3 innings) and a 1.24 WHIP in 253 appearances, 58 as a starter, covering eight minor league campaigns. He was originally selected by Oakland in the 27th round of the 2010 Draft out of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and spent his first six seasons in the Athletics chain before signing a minor league contract with the Dodgers for 2016.
Kyle Hendricks, 27, is 4-3 with a 4.09 ERA (28 earned runs in 61 2/3 innings) and a 1.20 WHIP in 11 starts with the Cubs this season. Hendricks has given up 29 runs, 28 earned, on 53 hits with 21 walks and 51 strikeouts.
Brett Anderson has been a big disappointment and now finds himself on another team’s 60-day disabled list. Anderson, 29, is 2-2 with an 8.18 ERA (20 earned runs in 22 innings) and a 2.09 WHIP in six starts with the Cubs this season. He was placed on the disabled list on May 7 with a low back strain.
