Cubs select 41 players in 2017 First-Year Player Draft … Brendon Little, Alex Lange, Cory Abbott, Keegan Thompson, Erich Uelmen and Nelson Velazquez taken in first five rounds

The Cubs completed Wednesday the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The club made 41 selections during the three-day event.

The Cubs selected a couple of Illinois natives on the third day of the Draft. In the 12th round, the Cubs selected Effingham, Illinois native Ben Hecht out of Wichita State University. Hecht attended St. Anthony High School in Effingham. In the 33rd round, the Cubs selected catcher Joe Donovan out of Westmont High School in nearby Westmont, Illinois.

After drafting just three college position players in the first 14 rounds of the Draft, the Cubs selected three college hitters in rounds 15-19. The Cubs selected 2B Jared Young (Old Dominion) in the 15th round, CF Brandon Hughes (Michigan State) in the 16th round and CF Chris Singleton (Charleston Southern) in the 19th round.

In the 21st round, the Cubs selected right-handed pitcher Sean Barry from the University of San Diego, the same college as Cubs infielder Kris Bryant.

Here is a look at Chicago’s 41 selections from the 2017 First-Year Player Draft:

Overall, the Cubs selected 25 pitchers (21 right-handed and four left-handed), one catcher, six outfielders and nine infielders. Additionally, the Cubs selected 29 college players and 12 high school players.
