Updated 10:43pm CST – Cardinals have called a 10:00am CT press conference on Friday to announce signing Dexter Fowler. It is official … Fowler is on the wrong side of the rivalry.
According to a report from Bob Nightengale, Dexter Fowler is close to signing with the Cardinals. A deal that would land Fowler in Cardinals’ red is expected to be finalized soon.
The Cardinals prioritized signing Fowler to leadoff and play center field and targeted him during the summer to solve several of their issues offensively and defensively.
According to a report from Derrick Goold the Cardinals made an over-the-top offer to Fowler and he is on his way to St. Louis for a physical that is scheduled for Friday.
The Cardinals initial offer to Fowler was believed to be four years and $60 million. Fowler was looking for a multi-year contract with an $18 million average annual value (AAV).
With Fowler rejecting the qualifying offer, the Cardinals will surrender their first round pick to sign Fowler and the Cubs will receive a comp pick, and slot money, in June’s draft.
