Cubs sign RHP Maikel Cleto, RHP Daniel Corcino and RHP Jhondaniel Medina to minor league contracts … Re-Sign RHP Miguel Mejia to minor league deal
According to Baseball America, the Cubs signed three pitchers to minor league contracts and re-signed a fourth that was in the system last season.
The Cubs have signed RHP Maikel Cleto, RHP Daniel Corcino and RHP Jhondaniel Media and re-signed RHP Miguel Mejia. Baseball America did not indicate how many of the players received non-roster invitations to Spring Training.
RHP Maikel Cleto, 27, was signed as an amateur free agent in 2006 by the Mets. Cleto last pitched in the big leagues in 2014 with the White Sox. He was in the Braves system for a majority of last season, pitching at Triple-A Gwinnett.
Cleto made 20 appearances, all in relief, for Gwinnett and was 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. Cleto allowed six runs, five earned, on 20 hits with 13 walks and 31 strikeouts in 21 innings. Cleto spent the 2015 season in the White Sox system and was 3-2 in 31 games with a 3.00 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.
In 10 seasons in the minors, Cleto is 32-42 in 247 games, 90 starts, with a 4.75 ERA and 1.46 WHIP.
Maikel Cleto broke in with the Cardinals during the 2011 season. Over four years in the big leagues, three with the Cardinals and one with the White Sox, Cleto is 0-1 with a 6.60 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 5.82 FIP in 41 relief appearances.
RHP Daniel Corcino, 26, was signed by the Reds as an amateur free agent in 2008. Corcino made his Major League debut against the Cubs on Aug. 26, 2014. Corcino has not pitched in the majors since 2014 when he was 0-2 in five games, three starts, for the Reds with a 4.34 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 4.69 FIP.
Corcino was in the Dodgers’ system last season. The Dodgers claimed Corcino off waivers from the Reds on April 17, 2015 and re-signed him to a minor league contract Dec. 17, 2015.
Daniel Corcino pitched in two levels of the Dodgers’ organization last season (High-A Rancho Cucamonga, Double-A Tulsa) and was a combined 1-1 in 30 relief appearances with a 3.32 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. In 40 2/3 innings, he allowed 17 runs, 15 earned, on 34 hits with 12 walks and 35 strikeouts.
RHP Jhondaniel Medina, 23, has spent the last four seasons in the Pirates system. Last year, Medina was in Double- and Triple-A, pitching a total of 46 games in relief.
Medina was 2-2 in 37 games with a 3.70 ERA and 1.30 WHIP for Double-A Altoona. In nine games for Triple-A Indianapolis, he was 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA and 1.39 WHIP.
Last season, Medina was 3-3 in 46 games with a 3.49 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Medina allowed 31 runs, 27 earned, on 54 hits with 38 walks and 70 strikeouts in 69 2/3 innings.
Over seven minor league seasons, Jhondaniel Medina has posted a 20-21 record in 198 games, 30 starts, with a 2.70 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. Media turns 24 in February.
RHP Miguel Mejia, 28, re-signed with the Cubs after pitching this past season for Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. Mejia was in the Tigers and Marlins systems early in his career.
Last season with the Smokies, Mejia was 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in eight relief appearances. With the I-Cubs, Mejia was 1-1 with a 5.70 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in 30 games out of the pen. Combined, Mejia posted a 2-3 record in 38 games, all in relief, with a 5.04 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. Mejia gave up 35 runs, 34 earned, on 69 hits with 18 walks and 60 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings.
In four minor league seasons, Miguel Mejia is 11-9 in 91 games, two starts with a 3.72 ERA and 1.17 WHIP.
