Cubs sign RHP Mario Meza to Minor League Contract
The Cubs have signed right-handed reliever Mario Meza to a minor league contract. Meza is a veteran of the Mexican League and is coming off a good season with Leones. Meza is considered one of the top relief pitchers in the league.
Mario Meza, 25, turns 26 on November 24. The right-hander is 6-foot-3, 183 pounds and has mainly been used as a reliever during his four-year career in the Mexican League.
Meza was 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 2014. In 36 games, Meza completed 38 innings and allowed eight runs on 24 hits with 10 walks and 47 strikeouts. Meza missed the entire 2015 season.
This past season, Meza made 53 appearances and was 4-2 with a 1.59 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Meza allowed 12 runs, nine earned, on 37 hits with 20 walks and 51 strikeouts in 51 innings.
Meza held right-handers to a .168 batting average while left-handers hit .274 against him. Of his 51 strikeouts, 37 came against righties with only eight walks and 20 hits allowed in 35 2/3 innings. Based on the numbers, Meza struggles with his command against lefties. In 15 1/3 innings, Meza issued 12 of his 20 walks on the season to left-handed hitters.
Mario Meza was 9-12 with a 4.60 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 156 games, 20 starts, during his four seasons in the Mexican League.
