Cubs re-sign C/3B/1B Gioskar Amaya and RHP Nick Sarianides to minor league contracts

amaya110816The Cubs re-signed two players to minor league contracts. C/3B/1B Gioskar Amaya and RHP Nick Sarianides will return to the organization for the 2017 season on minor league deals.

Gioskar Amaya, 23, began the 2016 season with High-A Myrtle Beach and finished the year with Double-A Tennessee after a promotion on June 24.

Amaya played in 44 games for the Pelicans and batted .245/.335/.427 with nine doubles, a triple and five home runs for a .762 OPS.

Amaya struggled at the plate with the Smokies. In 44 games, 146 plate appearances, for Double-A Tennessee, Amaya hit .183/.267/.237 with two doubles, a triple and a home run for a .504 OPS.

In 88 combined games last season between High-A Myrtle Beach and Double-A Tennessee, Amaya hit .215/.304/.336 with 11 doubles, two triples and six home runs for a .639 OPS.

Over seven seasons in the Cubs’ system, Gioskar Amaya has hit .274/.356/.388 with 97 doubles, 36 triples and 28 home runs for a .744 OPS.

Nick Sarianides, 27, signed with the Cubs on a minor league contract on May 11. After a month in extended Spring Training, Sarianides was assigned to Double-A Tennessee on June 9. Other than a couple of stints on the 7-day DL, Sarianides spent the remainder of the season with the Smokies.

Sarianides appeared in 22 games, all in relief, for Double-A Tennessee and was 3-3 with a 3.60 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Sarianides allowed 11 runs, 10 earned, on 21 hits with nine walks and 28 strikeouts in 25 innings.

Before signing with the Cubs, Sarianides pitched in eight games for Double-A Mobile in the D-Backs system. In 30 games last season between Mobile and Tennessee, Sarianides was 3-3 with a 3.62 ERA and 1.50 WHIP (18 runs, 15 earned, 36 hits, 20 walks, 33 strikeouts, 37 1/3 innings).
