Baseball America names the Cubs its Organization of the Year for 2016
For the first time the Cubs are Baseball America’s Organization of the Year. Baseball America announced Monday that The World Series Champions are the top organization in the game for 2016. Kyle Glaser detailed in his report how far the Cubs have come under Ricketts family ownership and with Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod calling the shots on the baseball side.
The front office not only had to build the talent on the field, but the team was not staffed properly and those in the organization were not given the tools or put in a position to succeed.
The Cubs were built from the ground up and almost five years to the day that Theo Epstein was introduced as the team’s President of Baseball Operations, the organization reached the ultimate goal by winning The World Series.
The Cubs had the best record in baseball during the regular season (103-58-1), won the National League Central Division and earned the franchise’s first National League Pennant in 71 Years. The best team in baseball beat the Indians in seven games to end the longest championship drought in professional sports.
Kyle Glaser pointed out “15 of the 25 players on the Cubs World Series roster were age 28 or younger” and three minor league affiliates made the playoffs this past season.
The Cubs starting lineup in Game 7 of The World Series featured seven players age 27 or younger and was started by 26-year old Kyle Hendricks (turns 27 on Dec. 7). Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Kyle Schwarber, Javier Baez and Willson Contreras are all 24-years old or younger.
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (High-A) repeated as Carolina League Champions. The Eugene Emeralds (Short-Season Class A) won the Northwest League Championship and the South Bend Cubs (Low-A) experienced postseason baseball.
The Cubs farm system is not as top heavy or features as many blue chip prospects as it has in recent years. The Cubs have a lot of depth in the organization with players from top to bottom that project as big leaguers.
The Chicago Cubs are World Series Champions with the talent and leadership in place to win multiple championships in the years to come.
