The Cubs and Giants resume the National League Division Series tonight (8:38pm CDT) with Game 3 at AT&T Park. Jake Arrieta takes on Madison Bumgarner and Joe Maddon has changed up his lineup.
Miguel Montero is catching Jake Arrieta as expected.
The Cubs have had David Ross (Game 1, Jon Lester), Willson Contreras (Game 2, Kyle Hendricks) and Montero start the first three games of the NLDS.
The Cubs become the fifth team in postseason history to use three different catchers to start the first three games of a postseason series, joining the 2002 Diamondbacks, 1998 Padres, 1927 Yankees and 1915 Red Sox.
Cubs batting order: Dexter Fowler CF, Kris Bryant 3B, Anthony Rizzo 1B, Jorge Soler LF, Ben Zobrist RF, Addison Russell SS, Javier Baez 2B, Miguel Montero C, Jake Arrieta P
Jason Heyward is not starting, which comes as a surprise with ‘Triples Alley,’ the huge right center field at AT&T Park.
Madison Bumgarner has dominated left-handed hitters this season. Lefties have hit only .178/.218/.294 with .513 OPS and 10 extra basehits (five doubles, one triple and four home runs) in 174 plate appearances. Right-handers have batted .220/.275/.367 with .642 OPS and 55 extra basehits (32 doubles, one triple and 22 home runs) in 738 plate appearances.
Joe Maddon is gambling that the Cubs can score runs off Bumgarner early and that Arrieta can keep the Giants off the scoreboard before he can put in Heyward, Contreras or Ross and Almora Jr. for defense.
The Cubs will begin the game with David Ross, Willson Contreras, Chris Coghlan, Tommy La Stella, Albert Almora Jr. and Jason Heyward on the bench.
