The National League Division Series – Game 2
Cubs Lead Best-of-Five Series, 1-0
The Cubs and Giants square off in Game 2 of the National League Division Series tonight. It’s former teammates Kyle Hendricks and Jeff Samardzija facing off as the Cubs look to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
The Cubs must be patient and make Jeff Samardzija work early in the game. Samardzija wanted this matchup in the spring, to pitch at Wrigley against the Cubs in October. Samardzija got his wish and will be amped up tonight. If the Cubs are able to do what they did against him on Sept. 1 it will be a very happy flight to San Francisco.
Kyle Hendricks will look too keep the Giants on their heels and guessing at the plate tonight in what should be another close game based on the recent history of these two teams. The last six games between the Cubs and Giants have been decided by one run. The Cubs are 4-2 in those six games. The Giants know with Madison Bumgarner ready to go in Game 3 that with a win tonight they are in the driver seat in the short-series.
Hendricks relies on the Cubs defense so it will be interesting to see how Joe Maddon sets up his lineup. Samardzija’s splits (LHB – .272/.320/.461/.780; RHB – .225/.276/.364/.639) point to Maddon using a left-handed heavy starting lineup. But defensively, the Cubs might create more run scoring opportunities for the Giants without Javier Baez and Willson Contreras on the field.
Tonight all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks proved his critics wrong this season. Hendricks had a breakout year and earned all of the praise he has received. Hendricks will have to continue it tonight against the Giants in the postseason to validate the season he had. Those that kept expecting Hendricks to fall off during the season are certain he will not have the same amount of success in the biggest games in October.
Hendricks did not finish the season the way he hoped. Hendricks ran into problems in Cincinnati and gave up four runs on six hits in five innings. Hendricks was 3-1 in the four starts leading into the game against the Reds with a 1.38 ERA and 0.88 WHIP.
Hendricks was 9-2 in 14 starts after the break with a 1.68 ERA and 0.92 WHIP. And at Wrigley this season, Hendricks was 9-2 in 15 games, 14 starts, with a 1.32 ERA and 0.86 WHIP.
Kyle Hendricks made one start against the Giants this season. And it came in San Francisco against Madison Bumgarner. Hendricks gave up one run on three hits with three walks and one strikeout in 5 1/3 innings. The Cubs lost 1-0. Bumgarner pitched 7 2/3 innings of the shutout and doubled in the Giants only run.
Hendricks has faced the Giants three times in his career. Hendricks is 1-2 with a 4.32 ERA and 1.26 WHIP (eight runs, 13 hits, eight walks, 12 strikeouts, 16 2/3 innings).

The Cubs take on former teammate Jeff Samardzija tonight. Samardzija had an inconsistent season in his first year with the Giants. Samardzija is coming off a loss to the Rockies. Samardzija allowed two runs on seven hits with a walk and 11 strikeouts in six innings. The Giants lost 2-0 and are 2-4 the last six times Samardzija has started a game.
Samardzija is 1-2 in his last six starts with a 2.95 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. And over his last 14 starts of the season, Samardzija was 3-6 with a 3.66 ERA and 1.22 WHIP.
The Cubs faced Samardzija in the spring and then again at Wrigley last month. Samardzija was left in for four innings after allowing three runs during an extremely long first inning. Samardzija settled in after the Cubs backed off and he was charged with three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
