The National League Championship Series – Game 6
Cubs lead Best-of-Seven Series 3-2
It’s Game 6 of the National League Championship Series. Hendricks versus Kershaw as the Cubs look to win the National League Pennant.
Kyle Hendricks had an excellent season, especially at Wrigley. The Cubs lined up the NLCS rotation to start Hendricks twice at home instead of on the road. The Cubs wanted Hendricks on the mound for this game if the NLCS returned to Wrigley Field.
The Cubs played all season to be in this position. If the Cubs are unable to win the series tonight, the seventh game of the NLCS will be at Wrigley and in front of their home crowd. Joe Maddon and the Cubs will do everything possible to end the series and beat the Dodgers tonight to avoid a Game 7. If Hendricks struggles early look for Maddon to go to his pen and use the three lefty relievers (Mike Montgomery, Travis Wood, Rob Zastryzny) to keep the game from getting away.
Willson Contreras is expected to be behind the plate to catch Hendricks. And Maddon could turn to Albert Almora Jr. for another right handed bat against Kershaw that would not weaken the outfield defense.
The Cubs will have to beat Clayton Kershaw tonight. The Dodgers have a simple plan. Ride Kershaw as long as possible and then give the ball to Kenley Jansen. Dave Roberts has little to no trust in the other relievers in his bullpen. The Dodgers want to make only one pitching change and force a Game 7 on Sunday night.
The Dodgers are 4-0 this postseason in games Clayton Kershaw has pitched and 1-5 in the other six games.
As has become the Cubs mantra this postseason, in order to be the best you have to beat the best.
Tonight all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks starts for the second time in the series and faces the challenge of making the right adjustments to keep the Dodgers in check. Hendricks was not as sharp his last time out as he is capable of being. Hendricks was effective and allowed just one run on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. The only run in the 1-0 loss in Game 2, a solo homer by Adrian Gonzalez.
Hendricks was coming off a shortened start against the Giants and struggled with his command early on. Being back on his regular routine should benefit Hendricks tonight.
In two starts this postseason, Hendricks has allowed three runs, all earned, on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts in nine innings (3.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP).
Kyle Hendricks was really, really good at Wrigley during the regular season. Hendricks was 9-2 in 15 games, 14 starts, with a 1.32 ERA and 0.86 WHIP. And in night games, Hendricks was 7-5 in 16 games, 15 starts, with a 1.83 ERA and 0.98 WHIP.
Kyle Hendricks takes on the Dodgers for the third time on the year and for the fifth time in his career.

The Cubs have to deal with the best pitcher on the planet tonight in Clayton Kershaw. The lefty dominated the Cubs in Game 2 and allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings. Kershaw did not use his curveball but had incredible command of his fastball. The Cubs will have to force him to make mistakes tonight. Not allowing Kershaw to get a rhythm should be at the top of the game plan.
The Dodgers have won all four games Kershaw has pitched in this postseason. Kershaw has allowed eight runs on 15 hits with four walks and 25 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings (3.72 ERA, 1.09 WHIP).
Kershaw was 4-3 in 11 road starts during the regular season with a 2.18 ERA and 1.04 WHIP.
Clayton Kershaw is 5-3 in eight career starts against the Cubs with a 2.18 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. And at Wrigley in the regular season, Kershaw is 1-2 in three starts with a 3.00 ERA and 1.22 WHIP.
