National League Division Series Game 2 – Cubs 5, Giants 2

Kyle Hendricks singled in two runs. Travis Wood hit a solo home run in the fourth. Hendricks and Wood drove in three of the Cubs five runs. Ben Zobrist and Kris Bryant delivered run scoring hits and the bullpen took care of the rest. The pen allowed two hits over the last 5 1/3 innings in relief of Hendricks. And the Cubs beat the Giants 5-2 on Saturday night at the old ballyard.
The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five National League Division Series.
The Cubs jumped on Jeff Samardzija and scored four of the five runs in the first two innings of the game. The Cubs forced Bruce Bochy to take Samardzija out in the third inning.
Ben Zobrist (1-for-4 with a RBI) came through with a two-out single in the first inning that plated Dexter Fowler (1-for-4 with a double and a run scored). The Cubs scored three runs in the second with Kyle Hendricks delivering the big hit.
The Cubs loaded the bases with no outs in the second on a Jason Heyward (1-for-4 with a double and a run scored) double, a walk by Javier Baez (1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored) and a single to right off the bat of Willson Contreras (2-for-3 with a run scored).
Kyle Hendricks (1-for-1 with two RBI) blooped Samardzija’s first pitch to center. Heyward and Baez scored. And Kris Bryant (1-for-4 with a RBI) drove in Contreras with a single to right to cap the scoring in the second inning.
Travis Wood (1-for-1 with a home run) replaced Hendricks with two outs in the fourth. Hendricks was hit with a line drive from Angel Pagan and was forced to leave the game. Wood picked up the last out in the top of the fourth. And he went yard in the home-half of the inning.
Travis Wood launched a solo homer to left off George Kontos for the Cubs’ fifth and final run on the night.
Kyle Hendricks and Travis Wood combined to drive in three of the Cubs’ five runs on the night.
Kyle Hendricks pitched two scoreless innings to start his night before running into trouble in the third. Doubles from Joe Panik and pinch-hitter Gregor Blanco and a sac fly from Brandon Belt cut the Cubs lead to 4-2. Hendricks turned the game over to the pen with one on and two outs in the fourth.
Hendricks left the game with a right forearm contusion. X-rays were negative and he’s day-to-day. Hendricks said after the game he does not think he will miss his next start.
Kyle Hendricks allowed two runs on four hits with no walks or strikeouts. Hendricks made 52 pitches, 34 for strikes, in 3 2/3 innings.
Travis Wood set the tone for the bullpen. Wood struck out two in 1 1/3 perfect innings in relief of Hendricks.
Carl Edwards Jr., Mike Montgomery, Hector Rondon and Aroldis Chapman shut the Giants down. The Cubs pen allowed two hits with no walks and six strikeouts on Saturday night.
The Cubs defense was a little shaky with a catcher’s interference call on Willson Contreras and both a fielding and throwing error charged to Kris Bryant on the same play in the fifth that allowed pinch-hitter Madison Bumgarner to reach second base.
With the way the pitching staff performed, the Cubs defense made the routine plays needed to win the game.
Dexter Fowler made Jeff Samardzija work again in the first inning of a ballgame. Fowler put together an excellent nine-pitch at bat that ended with a double off the ivy in right center. Fowler just missed leading off the bottom of the first with a home run.
Kris Bryant grounded out to third base. Fowler had to hold. Samardzija struck out Anthony Rizzo swinging and it was up to Zobrist to not waste Fowler’s leadoff double.
Ben Zobrist blooped a 1-1 pitch to right. Fowler was off with the crack of the bat and scored on Zobrist’s single, 1-0 Cubs. Russell grounded out to Panik at second base to end the inning.
The Cubs took a 1-0 lead into the second inning.
Kyle Hendricks worked out of a jam in the second inning and did not allow the Giants to score. Hunter Pence led off the second with a bloop single to right. Crawford pulled a 2-1 pitch toward first. Rizzo fielded the ball cleanly and threw to Russell at second to force Pence. Russell’s return throw was just a little late. Angel Pagan was given first base after Contreras interfered with his swing on a 1-1 pitch. Catcher’s interference put runners on first and second with one out.
Hendricks induced a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Conor Gillaspie to end the inning.
The Cubs went to work against Samardzija in the bottom of the second.
Jason Heyward led off the second with double down the right field line. Javier Baez walked and Willson Contreras singled to right. Heyward had to hold to make sure Pence did not catch the sinking liner. The Cubs loaded the bases with no outs for Kyle Hendricks.
Kyle Hendricks blooped Samardzija’s first pitch into center. Heyward scored. Baez read the ball perfectly and scored from second base … 3-0 Cubs. Dexter Fowler flied out to right. Contreras tagged and went to third. Fowler’s productive out led to the Cubs’ fourth run.
With runners on the corners and one down, Kris Bryant lined a 0-1 pitch to right. Pence made a diving catch but could not hang on to the ball. Contreras scored, 4-0 Cubs. With two on and one down, Rizzo fouled out to left and Zobrist popped out to third to end the inning.
The Cubs 4-0 lead after two innings did not last long.
Joe Panik started the third inning with a double to the left field corner. Bruce Bochy went to his bench and sent up Gregor Blanco to hit for Jeff Samardzija.
Gregor Blanco doubled to left center. Panik scored, 4-1 Cubs. Denard Span grounded out to second. Blanco went to third and scored on a sac fly to center from Brandon Belt. And just like that, the Cubs lead was down to 4-2.
Kyle Hendricks induced a grounder to third off the bat of Buster Posey to end the inning.
The Cubs did nothing against George Kontos in the third … the game went to the fourth with the Cubs leading 4-2.
Hendricks retired Pence on a foul out to Contreras for the first out in the fourth. Bryant made a nice pick of a grounder off the bat of Brandon Crawford for the second out.
Angel Pagan lined a 1-2 pitch back up the middle that hit Hendricks in the right forearm. Maddon and Cubs’ trainer P.J. Mainville checked on Hendricks and he was left the game. Maddon went to his pen for Travis Wood.
Travis Wood caught Conor Gillaspie looking at a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.
Maddon went to Wood with two outs in the fourth with lefties due up for the Giants and with the pitcher’s spot due to hit second in the bottom of the inning. And Wood jumped on the first pitch with one out in the fourth.
Carl Edwards Jr., Mike Montgomery, Hector Rondon and Aroldis Chapman nailed down the 5-2 win.
With Saturday’s win, the Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five NLDS.
The Cubs have a workout scheduled at AT&T Park on Sunday afternoon. Game 3 of the NLDS is Monday night (8:38pm CDT) in San Francisco … Jake Arrieta versus Madison Bumgarner.
