Jake Buchanan, RHP (0-0, 9.99/1.00/14.14) vs. Josh Smith, RHP (3-2, 4.77/1.44/5.23)
The Cubs are 13-3 versus the Redlegs this season and turn to Jake Buchanan in what should be a second straight bullpen game. The rain in Pittsburgh kept Joe Maddon from executing his plan for the pen on Thursday. As long as the weather cooperates today, Maddon should be able to get relievers work tonight he wasn’t able to at PNC Park.
Jason Hammel was scratched from his last start of the regular season with right elbow stiffness. The Cubs said he’s been pitching through the injury for a couple of weeks. With Hammel unable to go tonight, Jake Buchanan becomes just the 11th different starting pitcher the Cubs will use this season.
After tonight’s bullpen game with Buchanan squaring off against Josh Smith, Jon Lester is scheduled to face RHP Tim Adleman on Saturday afternoon (3:10pm CDT). The regular season wraps on Sunday afternoon (2:10pm CDT) with Kyle Hendricks taking on RHP Robert Stephenson.
The Cubs could really use a good performance by the offense, especially if Maddon starts his regulars as expected, for no other reason than just because it’s baseball.
Tonight all starts with Jake Buchanan …
Jake Buchanan makes his first start for the Cubs tonight and just his second appearance since he was called up from Triple-A Iowa when the roster expanded.
Buchanan pitched an inning of relief at Miller Park on Sept. 5. Buchanan served up a solo home run to Ryan Braun in the bottom of the ninth of a game the Cubs won 7-2. Buchanan allowed just the one hit and struck out a batter.
Jake Buchanan has appeared in 23 big league games over the course of his three years in the majors. Tonight will be just his third start. Buchanan is 1-3 with a 4.17 EERA, 1.39 WHIP and 4.90 FIP in the big leagues.
Buchanan made 22 starts for Triple-A Iowa this past season. Buchanan was 12-8 with a 4.34 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in the PCL. Buchanan allowed 76 runs, 68 earned, on 154 hits with 38 walks and 105 strikeouts in 141 innings.
Tyler Holt (1-for-1) is the only player on Bryan Price’s active roster that has faced Jake Buchanan in a regular season Major League game.
The Cubs get another look at Josh Smith tonight. The Cubs saw Smith for three innings 10 days ago at Wrigley Field. Smith allowed one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts in his first start of the year. Jon Lester and the Cubs won the game 6-1.
Smith pitched in relief his last time out against the Brewers. Smith completed one inning and gave up two hits and struck out two. Smith is 1-1 in his last six games, one start, with a 3.18 ERA and 1.41 WHIP.
Tonight is Smith’s second start of the season. Smith is 1-0 in 15 appearances at Great American Ball Park this season with a 3.42 ERA and 1.03 WHIP.
Josh Smith makes his four appearance, second start, of the season tonight against the Cubs. Smith is 0-1 in the first three with a 3.86 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. Smith has allowed three runs on six hits with five walks and six strikeouts in seven innings. For his career, Smith is 0-2 in four games, two starts, against the Cubs with a 5.25 ERA and 1.83 WHIP.
