Jason Hammel, RHP (14-9, 3.60/1.20/4.44) vs. Tim Adleman, RHP (2-4, 4.21/1.30/5.89)

The Cubs final homestand of the regular season continues tonight with Jason Hammel on the hill in the first of three with the Reds.

The Cubs are looking to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the second half against a team they’ve had a lot of success against this season. The Cubs are 10-3 versus the Reds in the first 13 games of the season series. The Cubs have 13 games left on the schedule, six against the Reds. The Cubs last three games of the 2016 season are in Cincinnati (Sept. 30-Oct. 2).

After tonight’s matchup of Jason Hammel and rookie right-hander Tim Adleman, Jon Lester gets the ball in the middle game of the series on Tuesday (7:05pm CDT). Bryan Price has not announced his starting pitcher yet. The series concludes under the lights Wednesday (7:05pm CDT) with John Lackey facing another rookie starting pitcher in right-hander Robert Stephenson.

Tonight all starts with Jason Hammel …

Jason Hammel was bitten by the longball again during his last start. As Hammel pointed out, it seems like every time he makes a mistake of late, the ball leaves the park. Hammel took the loss in St. Louis after he allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. The Cubs dropped the middle game with the Redbirds by a 4-2 final.

The Cubs are 1-4 in Hammel’s last five starts and in those games he has served up seven home runs. Hammel is 0-2 in his last two starts with a 9.53 ERA and 2.03 WHIP after posting a 4-2 record in six August starts with a 2.84 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.

Hammel is 9-1 in 13 starts at Wrigley Field this season with a 1.77 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. And tonight is his third start of the season against the Reds.

Hammel is 2-0 versus the Reds with a 0.00 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. In 12 innings, Hammel has not allowed a run while giving up seven hits and six walks with 10 strikeouts. For his career, Jason Hammel is 3-1 in 11 games, 10 starts, versus the Reds with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.

Reds Career Numbers against Jason Hammel

  • Joey Votto: 6-for-27 with one double, one home run and five walks
  • Brandon Phillips: 6-for-25 with one double
  • Eugenio Suarez: 5-for-14 with one double
  • Tucker Barnhart: 2-for-6
  • Ivan DeJesus Jr.: 1-for-4 with one walk
  • Adam Duvall: 0-for-5
  • Scott Schebler: 0-for-3
  • Tyler Holt: 0-for-2

It’s another day and another rookie starting pitcher facing the Cubs. Tim Adleman is making the 11th start of his career tonight in his first appearance against the Cubs.

Adleman is coming off a so-so outing against the Brewers. Adleman gave up four runs on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts in five innings. Adleman is 0-2 in his last three starts with a 5.06 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. And on the road, Adleman is 0-2 in four starts with a 3.91 ERA and 1.39 WHIP.

Tim Adleman was 3-1 in 10 starts with Triple-A Louisville before the call-up with a 2.38 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Adleman allowed 18 runs, 15 earned, on 52 hits with 10 walks and 38 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings.

No one on Joe Maddon’s active roster has faced Tim Adleman in a regular season big league ballgame.
