Weather permitting … The Cubs begin the final week of the regular season tonight in Pittsburgh with the first of four against the Pirates. The Cubs have seven games remaining on the schedule, all on the road. The regular season concludes Sunday afternoon (2:05pm CDT) in Cincinnati.
The forecast for the next four days in Pittsburgh doesn’t look favorable for baseball. The Cubs have their place in the postseason tournament locked up along with the position in the next June’s Draft. However slim, the Pirates are still in the hunt for the NL Wild Card and these four games will determine their spot in the standings. The Cubs can simply not afford to have any cancellations over the next week. Right now, the Cubs two goals are to post win No. 100 and continue to prepare for the tournament. Doubleheaders and extra trips to Pittsburgh simply do not fit in to what the Cubs need to accomplish this week.
This season has not gone as many, including the Pirates, thought it would for the Bucs. Clint Hurdle’s team begins play tonight a game under .500 and 4 ½ games back of the Giants for the second NL Wild Card, tied with the Marlins (77-78) and looking up at the Cardinals (81-74).
The Cubs are 12-3 versus the Pirates in the first 15 games of the season series. The Pirates season might have turned out differently had they just split with the Cubs instead of losing 12 of 15. The Pirates are 74-66 versus the rest of baseball.
After tonight’s matchup of right-handers Kyle Hendricks and Chad Kuhl, John Lackey is scheduled to face RHP Ryan Vogelsong on Tuesday (6:05pm CDT). Jake Arrieta makes his last start of the regular season on Wednesday night (6:05pm CDT) against RHP Jameson Taillon. The series concludes Thursday night (6:05pm CDT) with a bullpen day for the Cubs. LHP Rob Zastryzny is supposed to get the ball to start the game and will oppose former Yankees’ right-hander Ivan Nova.
Tonight all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks took the loss his last time out. Hendricks did not pitch poorly. He had one rough inning and the Cubs were not able to get on track against the Brewers. Hendricks allowed two runs on six hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. The Cubs dropped the game 3-1.
