This is it, the Cubs final series of the regular season at Wrigley Field. It’s Round Six of the Cubs-Cardinals Series. And the NL Central Division Champs have a chance to make it difficult on their long-time rivals to qualify for baseball’s postseason tournament.
The Cubs play their final three games of the 2016 season at Wrigley against the Cardinals. Joe Maddon said Wednesday that the Cubs would not hold back or stick to any preset plan for this series. The Cubs are out to win games and beat the Cardinals. And if Maddon’s team can play like their capable the Cubs have a chance to reach two more goals this weekend … best record in the NL and 100 wins on the season.
The Cubs and Cardinals have split the first 16 games of the season series (8-8). These next three games are about a lot more than just bragging rights. The Cubs must do everything possible to make it difficult for the Cardinals to play in the postseason this year.
The Cardinals enter play today on the outside looking in at the NL postseason. The Cardinals were off Thursday and spent the day in Chicago watching the Mets and Giants win their games. The Cardinals are a half game back of both the Mets and Giants for the two NL Wild Cards.
The Cubs will face two of the Cardinals best starters this weekend. And the Redbirds get to deal with Jake Arrieta, Jason Hammel and Jon Lester.
After today’s match up of Jake Arrieta and Mike Leake, the Cubs will get another shot at figuring out Alex Reyes. Hammel faces Reyes on Saturday afternoon (12:05pm CDT). And the series concludes Sunday night (7:08pm CDT) on the World Wide Leader with Lester on the hill against Carlos Martinez.
A clean, complete game that ends with a Cubs win would be the right way to start the weekend at Wrigley Field.
Today all starts with Jake Arrieta …
Jake Arrieta is looking to put together a good outing today and bounce back from a rough game against the Brewers. Arrieta struggled with his command and four walks not only shortened his start it helped out a team that he’s had issues with all season.
Arrieta said he was working on things and was subtracting velocity to improve his command. Arrieta may be thinking too much at this point. The Cubs feel it is mechanical with Arrieta and once he gets his fastball command to where it should be he will be able to throw strikes on a more consistent basis.
Arrieta is 1-2 in his last three starts with a 4.15 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. Arrieta has allowed 10 runs on 12 hits with eight walks and 15 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings.
Jake Arrieta makes his 16th and final start of the regular season at Wrigley today. Arrieta is 6-5 with a 2.82 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 15 home games. In 92 2/3 innings, Arrieta has allowed 33 runs, 29 earned, on 61 hits with 45 walks and 105 strikeouts.
Arrieta takes on the Cardinals for the fourth time on the season. Arrieta is 2-1 in the first three with a 3.45 ERA and 1.40 WHIP.
