Cubs Top Prospect Watch

Happ090616For the final Watch of the season, the Cubs had some spirited play.

Chesny Young raised his batting average by 10 points, did not strikeout in 30 at bats and won a batting title.

Ian Happ finished with a flourish, clubbing three home runs, while Duane Underwood Jr. dominated in his first start with High-A Myrtle Beach.

Dylan Cease saved his best for his last start of the regular season. Cease allowed one hit in five shutout innings with no walks and 10 strikeouts on Monday night. Cease recorded six groundball outs and made only 71 pitches, 52 for strikes, in a dominating performance.

And today’s wild card is a real favorite of the CCO readers.

Here then, is how the Top Prospects fared:

  • Dylan Cease (RHP) – 2-0 in 12 starts with a 2.22 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 27 hits, 11 earned runs, 25 walks, and 66 strikeouts in 44.2 innings. (Short Season-A Eugene Emeralds)
  • Oscar De La Cruz (RHP) – 1-2 in six starts with a 3.25 ERA, 1.085 WHIP, 22 hits, 10 earned runs, eight walks, and 35 strikeouts in 27.2 innings. (Low-A South Bend Cubs)
  • Ian Happ (2B/OF) – .262/.318/.415/.733, 14 doubles, eight home runs, 20 walks, 60 strikeouts, 248 at bats, 31 RBI, six stolen bases (Double-A Tennessee Smokies)
  • Bryan Hudson (LHP) – 5-4 in 13 starts with a 5.06 ERA, 1. 654 WHIP, 56 hits, 33 earned runs, 41 walks, and 41 strikeouts in 58.2 innings. (Short Season-A Eugene Emeralds)
  • Eloy Jimenez (OF) – .329/.369/.532/.901, 40 doubles, three triples, 14 home runs, 25 walks, 94 strikeouts, 432 at bats, 81 RBI, eight stolen bases (Low-A South Bend Cubs)
  • Eddy Julio Martinez (OF) – .254/.331/.380/.711, 24 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 50 walks, 113 strikeouts, 460 at bats, 67 RBI, eight stolen bases (Low-A South Bend Cubs)
  • Jen-Ho Tseng (RHP) – 6-8 in 22 starts with a 4.29 ERA, 1.500 WHIP, 138 hits, 60 earned runs, 32 walks, and 69 strikeouts in 113.1 innings. (Double-A Tennessee Smokies)
  • Duane Underwood Jr. (RHP) – 0-0 in one start with a 1.93 ERA, 0.644 WHIP, three hits, one earned run, no walks, and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings. (Advanced-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans)
  • D.J. Wilson (OF) – .257/.320/.371/.691, 15 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 21 walks, 56 strikeouts, 245 at bats, 29 RBI, 21 stolen bases (Short Season-A Eugene Emeralds)
  • Chesny Young (INF) – .303/.376/.387/.763, 25 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 57 walks, 64 strikeouts, 491 at bats, 37 RBI, 16 stolen bases (Double-A Tennessee Smokies)
