The Cubs and Brewers play game three of four this afternoon (3:05pm CDT) with Jake Arrieta on the hill against right-hander Zach Davies. Kris Bryant joins Joe Maddon’s B-Team and will start at first base giving Anthony Rizzo a second straight day off.
A majority of Maddon’s regulars are getting another break from the starting lineup. Willson Contreras is back behind the plate for Jake Arrieta and Tommy La Stella is leading off and playing third base.
Dexter Fowler, Jason Heyward, Ben Zobrist and Addison Russell are absent from the starting lineup for the second day in a row.
Cubs batting order: Tommy La Stella 3B, Kris Bryant 1B, Chris Coghlan LF, Willson Contreras C, Albert Almora Jr. CF, Javier Baez SS, Matt Szczur RF, Munenori Kawasaki 2B, Jake Arrieta P
Maddon is going with an outfield of Coghlan (LF), Almora Jr. (CF) and Szczur (RF) and a double play combination of Baez and Kawasaki.
Right-handers have hit .245/.287/.379 with a .666 OPS against Zach Davies this season while left-handers have a .766 OPS and have hit .270/.324/.442 with 28 extra basehits (16 doubles, three triples, nine home runs.
The Cubs have not given an update yet on Jorge Soler and what his status is for today’s game.
Updated 1:03pm CDT – Jorge Soler told Carrie Muskat that he’s okay. Maddon said he wanted to give Soler another day before getting him back in the lineup. Should be available off the bench today.
Joe Maddon will begin the game with a bench of Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist, Addison Russell, David Ross, Miguel Montero, Tim Federowicz, Jorge Soler, Dexter Fowler and Jason Heyward.
