Cubs place OF Chris Coghlan on 15-day DL with right rib contusion – Recall RHP Spencer Patton from Triple-A Iowa
The Cubs made a second round of roster moves Wednesday afternoon. Chris Coghlan was placed on the 15-day DL with a right rib contusion. Coghlan was injured in a collision with Addison Russell in game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader with the Brewers.
The Cubs recalled RHP Spencer Patton from Iowa. Patton is at Wrigley Field and available Wednesday night.
Earlier Wednesday, the Cubs placed RHP Joe Smith on the 15-day DL with a left hamstring strain.
With the four roster moves Wednesday, the Cubs 25-man roster consists of 13 pitchers (five starters, eight relievers) and 12 position players.
Spencer Patton, 28, joins the Cubs for the fourth time this season having posted a 1-1 record with a 5.11 ERA (seven earned runs in 12 1/3 innings) and 1.54 WHIP in nine big league outings. With Iowa, Patton has gone 1-0 with 11 saves and a 0.77 ERA (three earned runs in 35 innings) and 1.02 WHIP in 34 relief appearances. Patton has struck out 57 in 35 innings, good for an average of 14.7 strikeouts per nine innings. He has limited foes to a .175 batting average.
Chris Coghlan, 31, is batting .222/.377/.333 (12-for-54) with four doubles, one triple, .710 OPS and five RBI in 27 games since returning to the Cubs in June. Coghlan began the season by playing 51 games in Oakland and has combined to bat .165/261/.288/.549 (35-for-212) with nine doubles, a triple, five home runs and 19 RBI in 78 games between the two teams.
Tommy La Stella reported to Double-A Tennessee on Wednesday and is playing his first game since July 28. The Cubs optioned La Stella to Iowa on July 29. La Stella refused to report at the time and has finally decided to continue his baseball career. If La Stella had not gone home, he would have definitely been recalled with Coghlan going on the DL.
