Cubs activate OF Jorge Soler from 15-Day disabled list … RHP Joe Nathan designated for assignment
The Cubs made two roster moves prior to Friday’s opener in Oakland. Jorge Soler was activated from the 15-day DL. To make room on the active roster, RHP Joe Nathan was designated for assignment.
With Friday’s roster moves, the Cubs 25-man roster consists of 12 pitchers (four starters, eight relievers) and 13 position players.
The Cubs 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.
Jorge Soler has been on the DL since June 7 with a left hamstring strain. Soler was hitting .223/.322/.377 with five doubles and five home runs for a .699 OPS in 50 games before landing on the disabled list.
In a rather surprising move, the Cubs designated Joe Nathan for assignment. Nathan worked his way back from a second Tommy John surgery and put the time in the Cubs minor league system before he was activated from the 60-day DL on July 24.
Nathan appeared in three games for the Cubs and completed two innings. Nathan allowed two hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Nathan was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 2.00 WHIP.
