Major League Baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline is 3:00pm CDT today and the industry is expecting a very hectic day throughout baseball.
The Weekend Headlines will return next week and the Daily Report also gets a well-deserved off day. After more than 365 days without a break it really needed a breather.
Today is all about the non-waiver trade deadline and the moves the Cubs’ front office makes and the deals around the game that will impact the final two months of the regular season and October.
Joe Maddon said Sunday he’s not heard anything is going on with the Cubs.
“There’s nothing going on as far as I know … crickets,” Maddon said to the beat writers before Sunday’s unbelievable come from behind win over the Mariners in 12 innings.
It’s believed the Cubs are looking for controllable starting pitching and for a left-handed hitting outfielder.
According to a report from Bruce Levine late Sunday, the Cubs are “still trying hard for a pitcher.” The Rays have had talks with numerous teams, including the Cubs.
The Cubs were one of at least 12 teams that had scouts in attendance this weekend in Tampa for the Rays-Yankees series. The Cubs are believed to have a lot of interest in RHP Jake Odorizzi and LHP Matt Moore.
The Cubs have been connected heavily to Josh Reddick for months. But Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer may have stopped talking to Billy Beane about his outfielder. And questions popped up Sunday if the Cubs could talk to the Brewers again about Jonathan Lucroy after he invoked his no-trade rights and vetoed a deal the Brewers and Indians had in place to send Lucroy to Cleveland.
Here are a few of the reports from Saturday and Sunday to get you caught up for what is expected to be a busy day in Major League Baseball:
