Joe Maddon Using a Balanced Cubs Lineup in Opener with Angels

The Cubs begin the 10-game homestand Tuesday (7:05pm CDT) with the first of two against the Angels. John Lackey is on the hill facing former teammate veteran right-hander Jered Weaver.

Maddon080916-1Joe Maddon is going with a balanced lineup tonight, four right-handers, two left-handers and a pair of switch hitters.

Willson Contreras is catching Lackey and batting eighth. Jorge Soler is starting his fourth straight game since coming off the DL and is in left field. Maddon has Jason Heyward back in right field and a starting infield of Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist, Addison Russell and Kris Bryant.

Cubs batting order: Dexter Fowler CF, Kris Bryant 3B, Anthony Rizzo 1B, Ben Zobrist 2B, Jorge Soler LF, Jason Heyward RF, Addison Russell SS, Willson Contreras C, John Lackey P

Maddon was expected to run out a balanced lineup against Jered Weaver. Lefties and righties have put up big numbers against Weaver this season.

Left-handers have hit .289/.348/.469 against Weaver with a .817 OPS (18 extra basehits, eight doubles, 10 home runs). Right-handers have a .868 OPS (32 extra basehits, 17 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs) while hitting .307/.345/.523.

Maddon will begin the game with Matt Szczur, David Ross, Chris Coghlan, Miguel Montero and Javier Baez on his bench.
