Javier Baez’s ridiculous defense stood out in what was a perfect week for the Cubs
It was a very good week for the Chicago Cubs, one that began with the improbable comeback last Sunday at Wrigley that ended in the 12th inning with Jon Lester bunting in Jason Heyward with the winning run.
The Cubs won all six games, two in walk-off fashion and played with the early season mojo that wasn’t seen very often in June and July.
The Cubs defense was spectacular during the eight-game homestand, and played a big part in winning the first two games in Oakland.
When talking about the Cubs’ defense the first three players that come to mind are Addison Russell, Jason Heyward and Javier Baez.
The highlight reel of this year’s team will be packed with one Baez defensive gem after another. Baez has become one of the Cubs’ best players this season. And he isn’t even considered one of Joe Maddon’s regulars.
Javier Baez worked his magic in the field this past week and deserved the day off he received Saturday. Baez may be in a little slump offensively but to his credit, he never appears to let a bad day at the plate impact his defense.
It’s not too often a player can create multiple defense highlights in the same week, much less at three different positions.
Stay tuned for the next Javy Gem …
