Trevor Cahill, RHP (1-3, 3.07/1.39/4.53) vs. Matt Garza, RHP (4-4, 4.83/1.54/4.73)
The Cubs get back on the field and have a long day of ball today at Wrigley Field. The Cubs and Brewers have a day-night doubleheader on tap. And the first of two is the makeup of the game that was rained out on April 27.
The Cubs were 15-5 in late April and were facing a Brewers team that was 8-12 at the time. The pitching matchup three and a half months ago for what was the middle game of the three-game series was Jake Arrieta and Taylor Jungmann. The Cubs swept the rain-shortened two-game set.
The Cubs are 5-3 in the first eight games of the season with the Brewers. The offense has the tough task of facing a Brewers’ starting staff that the Cubs have struggled with this season.
Trevor Cahill will be activated from the 15-day DL and make the start today in game one of the twin bill. Cahill is starting a Major League game for the first time in over a year. Cahill becomes the eighth different pitcher to start a game for Joe Maddon this season. Mike Montgomery is scheduled to piggyback Cahill today. The Cubs have the pleasure of facing Matt Garza in the opener.
Jason Hammel is scheduled to take on Chase Anderson in the nightcap later today.
Jon Lester and Jimmy Nelson square off on Wednesday (7:05pm CDT) and Jake Arrieta opposes Zach Davies in finale of series on Thursday afternoon (1:20pm CDT).
It is very important for the Cubs to at least win this series with the difficult nine-game, three-city trip against the NL West (Rockies, Padres, Dodgers) that begins Friday in Denver on the horizon.
Game one all starts with Trevor Cahill …
Trevor Cahill makes his first start with the Cubs in game one of the twin bill. Cahill has not started a big league game since April 26, 2015 when he was in the Braves’ rotation. Maddon is going to get as many innings today as possible from Cahill before turning the game over to Mike Montgomery.
Cahill has been on the DL since July 15 (retroactive to July 9) with right knee patellar tendinitis. Cahill reported to Iowa a couple of days later and officially began a rehab assignment on July 18. Cahill spent a lot of time working on his secondary pitches during his six starts with the I-Cubs. Cahill’s fastball command waivered from one start to the next.
In six starts with Triple-A Iowa, Cahill was 0-3 with a 4.58 ERA and 1.88 WHIP. Cahill allowed 12 runs, 10 earned, on 25 hits with 12 walks and 25 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings.
Before he was placed on the DL, Cahill appeared in 33 games out of Maddon’s bullpen and was 1-3 with a 3.07 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 4.53 FIP. The Cubs need for Cahill to keep the ball down and get as many quick groundball outs as possible this afternoon.
Trevor Cahill makes his first career start against the Brewers today. Cahill does not have a record in nine career appearances and has allowed five runs on nine hits with 10 walks and 15 strikeouts in 12 innings (3.75 ERA, 1.58 WHIP).

- Ryan Braun: 1-for-4 with one double
- Martin Maldonado: 1-for-3 with one walk
- Hernan Perez: 2-for-4
- Chris Carter: 0-for-2
- Matt Garza: 0-for-2
- Jonathan Villar: 0-for-2

- Ramon Flores: 0-for-1
The Cubs get their first look of the season at Matt Garza. And it would really benefit Joe Maddon’s team to bunt early and as often as possible against Garza. He cannot stand to be bunted on. It gets him off his game. That is just one of the many reasons he’s not been able to pitch his way out of Milwaukee.
Garza is incredibly talented and will be on top of his game today. Garza is not the biggest fan of the team and front office that helped his career. Garza has put together a good stretch and is coming off a quality start against the Braves. Garza allowed two runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in six innings.
Garza is 2-0 in his last two starts with a 2.92 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. Outside of Miller Park, Garza is 1-4 in seven starts with a 5.40 ERA and 1.64 WHIP.
Matt Garza is 1-3 in six career starts against the Cubs with a 4.14 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. Last season, Garza held the Cubs in check in three starts. Garza was 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 0.95 WHIP.
Rattling Garza early and making him work must be part of the Cubs’ game plan.
