Kyle Hendricks, RHP (10-7, 2.22/1.05/3.32) vs. Sean Manaea, LHP (3-6, 4.68/1.31/4.20)
The Cubs look to complete the three-game sweep in Oakland today with Kyle Hendricks on the hill. And Joe Maddon would like to have gravy on his Meat Loaf for the flight back to Chicago.
The Cubs were able to take care of business in the first two games with the Athletics. Today has a little more meaning with the team clicking on all cylinders as Jake Arrieta declared following Saturday’s game. With the Cubs winning each of its last six games, Maddon’s team has a chance to climb 28 games over .500 for the first time this season and hold off the Cardinals for another day.
The Cubs will face a very talented lefty in Sean Manaea for the first time. Manaea is much better than his numbers and has pitched well in his home park. Maddon should load his lineup today with as many right-handed bats as possible against the rookie southpaw.
Right-handers have a .825 OPS against Manaea this season with 32 extra basehits in only 16 starts, 15 starts. Right-handers hitters have put together a .293/.335/.490 line with 19 doubles, a triple and 12 home runs. Left-handers have only a .533 OPS with four extra basehits and a .182/.237/.296 slash line.
It would be a good time to get Jason Heyward a breather. With Willson Contreras expected to catch Kyle Hendricks, Maddon would not have another option at first base to give Anthony Rizzo a day off before his 27th birthday.
Today all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks notched the second complete game shutout of his career the last time out. Hendricks was brilliant against the Fish. Hendricks allowed seven hits in nine innings with three walks. Hendricks struck out five. The few hard hit balls the Marlins had were turned into outs thanks to the Cubs defense last Monday night at Wrigley Field.
Hendricks is 3-1 in his last four starts with a 1.00 ERA and 1.15 WHIP.
Outside of Wrigley Field this season, Hendricks is 2-6 in nine starts with a 3.75 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. And two of the three games the Cubs have dropped that Hendricks has started since June 13 have been on the road. The Cubs are 7-3 in his last 10 starts.
Kyle Hendricks faces the Oakland A’s in a regular season game for the first time today.
Khris Davis (5-for-14 with two walks). Yonder Alonso (1-for-3) and Danny Valencia (1-for-3) are the only three players on Bob Melvin’s active roster that have faced Kyle Hendricks in a regular season game.
The Cubs get their first look at lefty Sean Manaea this afternoon. One of the top pitching prospects in the game has had mixed results in the majors this season. Manaea is coming off a loss to the Angels. Manaea allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
Over his last four games, Manaea is 0-1 with a 3.20 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. And he’s been a lot better in Oakland, as would be expected, than on the road. Manaea is 3-2 in 10 games, nine starts, with a 3.39 ERA and 1.16 WHIP at the Coliseum.
No one on Joe Maddon’s active roster has faced Sean Manaea in a regular season big league ballgame.
