Cubs reportedly discussing a deal with Angels for RHP Joe Smith

Smith080116According to a report from Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs are exploring a number of possibilities. And one of the options is veteran right-handed reliever Joe Smith of the Angels.

The Angels are talking to at least two other teams about Joe Smith according to Rosenthal.

Joe Smith is 1-4 in 38 games this season with a 3.82 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 4.62 FIP. In 37 2/3 innings, Smith has allowed 16 runs, all earned, on 36 hits with 13 walks and 25 strikeouts.

Smith has held right-handers to a .661 OPS this season, just two extra base hits (one double and one home run). Righties are hitting .267/.341/.320 against him.

Left-handers have a .738 OPS with a .246/.338/.400 slash line. Only four extra basehits (one double and three home runs) by lefties off Smith this season.
