Cubs recall INF Tommy La Stella from Triple-A Iowa, Option RHP Spencer Patton to Triple-A Iowa
The Cubs made two roster moves the day before the roster expands on Sept. 1. The Cubs recalled INF Tommy La Stella from Triple-A Iowa. To make room on the 25-man roster, RHP Spencer Patton was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
With Wednesday’s roster moves, the Cubs 25-man roster consists of 13 position players and 12 pitchers (five starters, seven relievers).
Tommy La Stella is in the Cubs’ starting lineup for Wednesday’s finale with the Pirates. La Stella is playing second base and batting seventh.
Spencer Patton appeared in three games and allowed two runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in five innings (3.60 ERA, 1.80 WHIP) during his recent call up. Patton has appeared in 12 games in the majors this season and is 1-1 with a 4.67 ERA and 1.62 WHIP.
Patton is 1-0 with 11 saves, a 0.77 ERA (three earned runs in 35 innings) and 1.02 WHIP in 34 relief outings with Iowa this year
Patton will be back with the Cubs after Iowa’s season ends on Monday.
Tommy La Stella hit .295/.388/.457 with nine doubles, a triple and two home runs for a .846 OPS in 51 games before he was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on July 29. La Stella went home for around three weeks while he decided whether or not he wanted to continue his career.
La Stella reported to Double-A Tennessee on Aug. 17 and played in two games before he was sent to Iowa. La Stella was 2-for-4 with two walks and a hit by pitch with the Smokies. La Stella played in six games for Triple-A Iowa. La Stella went 6-for-23 during his brief stint with the I-Cubs. La Stella combined to bat .296 (8-for-27) with two doubles, two walks and four runs scored between Double-A Tennessee (two games) and Triple-A Iowa (six games).
