Cubs’ lefty Jon Lester named National League Pitcher of the Month for June
For the second time this season, the National League’s top pitcher for a month resides in the Cubs’ rotation. Major League Baseball announced its players and pitchers of the month for June and Jon Lester was named National League Pitcher of the Month for June.
Jon Lester had a sensational month. Lester made six starts and posted a 4-0 record with a 1.41 ERA and 0.78 WHIP. Lester allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 28 hits (five home runs) with seven walks and 44 strikeouts in 44 2/3 innings. Lester held teams (Dodgers, Phillies, Braves, Pirates, Marlins, Reds) to a .178 batting average.
The Cubs were 5-1 in Lester’s six June starts.
Jon Lester’s next start is Sunday in Queens against Noah Syndergaard. And Lester will find out Tuesday if he will be one of the players representing the Cubs on the National League squad for the All-Star Game.
For the season, Jon Lester is 9-3 in 16 starts with a 2.03 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. Lester has given up 26 runs 24 earned, on 79 hits (11 home runs) and 24 walks. Lester has 103 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings.
Jake Arrieta (April) and Jon Lester (June) have won NL Pitcher of the Month Awards this season.
The Indians’ Danny Salazar was named the AL Pitcher of the Month. Jose Altuve of the Astros took home the AL Player of the Month award. Padres’ 1B/OF Wil Myers won the NL Player of the Month Award. The Indians’ Tyler Naquin and Dodgers’ Corey Seager were the top rookies of the month.
