Kyle Hendricks, RHP (9-6, 2.27/1.03/3.32) vs. James Shields, RHP (4-12, 4.99/1.50/5.26)
The Cubs will look to even the Crosstown Cup Series tonight behind Kyle Hendricks. And it will be up to Hendricks to keep the Sox from putting anything on the board while the offense figures out James Shields.
Kyle Hendricks has been the Cubs most consistent starting pitcher this season. Joe Maddon needs more of the same from his young right-hander tonight.
Hendricks has not allowed an earned run since the fourth inning at Great American Ball Park on June 29 (22 1/3 innings). With the way the offense is struggling it might take another scoreless outing from Hendricks to beat the Sox.
James Shields got off to a horrible start with the White Sox after the trade with the Padres landed him on the South Side. Shields is 2-5 with a 6.00 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 6.43 FIP in nine starts. Shields has been lights out over his last four starts (1-3 with a 2.28 ERA and 0.98 WHIP) and will be a huge challenge for the Cubs tonight.
The Cubs will activate Aroldis Chapman before tonight’s game and he is expected to be available. The Cubs will announce the corresponding roster move needed to add Chapman to the 25-man roster a couple of hours before first pitch.
Tonight all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks is coming off another excellent outing. Hendricks pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings against the Mets his last time out. The Cubs defense stepped up behind Hendricks and he took care of the rest. Hendricks gave up seven hits and issued a free pass while striking out seven.

Outside of Wrigley this season, Hendricks is 2-5 in eight starts with a 3.63 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. In 44 2/3 innings on the road, Hendricks has given up 23 runs, 18 earned, on 38 hits with 20 walks and 37 strikeouts.
Kyle Hendricks has faced the Sox twice in his career. Hendricks has two no-decisions and completed 10 1/3 innings while allowing five runs on 13 hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Both of his starts against the Southsiders came a year ago. In the one start at the Cell, Hendricks was pummeled.
