Jon Lester, LHP (10-4, 2.89/1.07/4.02) vs. Junior Guerra, RHP (6-2, 3.06/1.06/3.75)
Jon Lester gets the ball today as the Cubs look for two of three from the Brewers at Wrigley North. And Meat Loaf is a must for Joe Maddon’s team for the bus ride back to Chicago.
It’s a new day and the Cubs will have their hands full this afternoon with Junior Guerra. The Cubs struggled against him earlier this season. And like, Zach Davies, Guerra is in the middle of a very good stretch.
Guerra, the Brewers’ 31-year old rookie, has had a lot of success this season. The Cubs must make him work. Quick at-bats early in the game will play right into his hands. Guerra will issue free passes and when he’s walked at least three batters this season, the Brewers are 2-3 in those five starts. And have lost each of his last three starts he’s walked a minimum of three batters.
Joe Maddon is running out a balanced lineup without Dexter Fowler. Maddon is giving Fowler a breather after playing in back-to-back games. Right-handers have a .618 OPS (six doubles, two triples, five home runs) against Guerra this season while left-handers have a .629 OPS (seven doubles, one triple, four home runs).
Cubs batting order: Tommy La Stella 2B, Kris Bryant 3B, Anthony Rizzo 1B, Ben Zobrist RF, Willson Contreras LF, Jason Heyward CF, Addison Russell SS, David Ross C, Jon Lester P
Today all starts with Jon Lester …
Jon Lester makes his second start since the break and will look to pick up where he left off against the Mets. Lester had an excellent outing. He limited the Mets to one run on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts last Monday night at Wrigley and set the tone for the series.
Lester pitched into the eighth (7 2/3 innings) for the first time since June 28. Lester appeared to be on top of his game. In typical Lester fashion though, he said he was not happy with the way he pitched. Lester expects to be better today.
Due to the back-to-back horrible outings to finish the first half, Lester is 1-1 in his last three starts with a 10.50 ERA and 2.00 WHIP. Even with his three worst starts of the season being on the road, Lester is 5-2 in 10 games outside of Wrigley with a 3.67 ERA and 1.19 WHIP.
Joe Lester takes on the Brewers for the first time on the season. Lester is 2-2 in four starts against the Brewers in his career with a 2.22 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. Today is Lester’s first start at Miller Park.
Brewers Career Numbers against Jon Lester
- Ryan Braun: 5-for-13 with one double and one walk
- Jonathan Lucroy: 1-for-5 with one double and one walk
- Chris Carter: 1-for-3
- Martin Maldonado: 0-for-3
- Will Middlebrooks: 1-for-3 with one home run
- Hernan Perez: 2-for-3
Junior Guerra has notched at least a quality start in four of the last five times out. And he’s coming off a very good outing in Pittsburgh in which he limited the Pirates to two runs on three hits in six innings. Guerra gave up two runs on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts to the Pirates the last time out. The Brewers lost 3-2.
Over his last three starts Guerra is 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. And at Miller Park this season, Guerra is 4-2 with a 2.76 ERA and 1.09 WHIP.
Guerra dominated the Cubs earlier this season. His final line is not indicative of the way he pitched on May 19 in the Brewers 5-3 victory over the Cubs at Miller Park. Guerra allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts in seven innings. Today is Guerra’s second career start against the Cubs.
The Cubs could have a very frustrating afternoon in Milwaukee against Junior Guerra.
