Cubs Sign 24 Players from First-Year Player Draft

July 15, 2016 11:05 pm By Neil Leave a Comment

The Cubs announced the team signed a total of 24 players selected in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft in advance of Friday’s deadline.

The Cubs announced the signings RHP Michael Rucker (11th round), INF Delvin Zinn (23rd round) and RHP Nathan Sweeney (33rd round). According to John Manuel, the Cubs did not sign Delvin Zinn ($100,000) or Nathan Sweeney ($100,000) to over slot bonuses.

The Cubs signed the following 24 players: RHP Thomas Hatch (third round), RHP Tyson Miller (fourth round), RHP Bailey Clark (fifth round), RHP Chad Hockin (sixth round), C Michael Cruz (seventh round), RHP Stephen Ridings (eighth round), RHP Duncan Robinson (ninth round), RHP Dakota Mekkes (10th round), RHP Michael Rucker (11th round), LHP Wyatt Short (13th round), RHP Jed Carter (15th round), RHP Holden Cammack (16th round), SS Zack Short (17th round), LHP Marc Huberman (18th round), RHP Matt Swarmer (19th round), LHP Colton Freeman (20th round), C Sam Tidaback (21st round), INF Delvin Zinn (23rd round), 2B Trent Giambrone (25th round), CF Connor Myers (27th round), RHP Tyler Peyton (29th round), CF Zach Davis (32nd round), RHP Nathan Sweeney (33rd round) and CF Tolly Filotei (38th round).

If the bonus numbers are correct, the Cubs had $2,344,900 in bonuses to the first nine picks in the draft (Rounds 3-11) count against the $2,245,100 signing bonus pool. According to Jim Callis, the Cubs spent a total of $2,959,900 on this year’s draft. The Cubs have not confirmed the signing bonuses paid to each player.

2016 Cubs First-Year Player Draft

The Cubs signing bonus pool for the first 10 rounds of this year’s draft is $2,245,100 million. If the Cubs sign a player in rounds 11-40 for more than $100,000, the excess is counted against the team’s bonus pool. If the Cubs draft a player in the first 10 rounds they are unable sign, the assigned slot value is removed from their bonus pool allotment.

The Cubs had $2,344,900 in bonuses to the first nine picks in the draft (Rounds 3-11) count against the signing bonus pool. According to Jim Callis, the Cubs spent a total of $2,959,900 on this year’s draft. The Cubs have not confirmed the signing bonuses paid to each player.

If the Cubs exceed its draft bonus pool by five percent, they will pay a 75 percent tax on the overage. If the Cubs exceed its draft bonus pool by five to 10 percent, the penalty would be a 75 percent tax on the overage and the loss of next year’s first round pick. If the Cubs were to exceed its draft bonus pool by 10 to 15 percent, there would be a 100 percent tax on the overage and the front office would forfeit the team’s first and second round pick in the 2017 draft. If the Cubs were to spend more than 15 percent of its bonus pool, the penalty is a 100 percent tax on the overage and two future first-round picks.

Deadline for teams to sign 2016 draft picks was July 15.
