Cubs recall 3B/1B Jeimer Candelario from Triple-A Iowa – Place OF/INF Chris Coghlan on 15-Day DL

The Cubs made two roster moves Sunday. The Cubs have recalled 3B/1B Jeimer Candelario from Triple-A Iowa. Candelario is starting at third base and batting sixth for Joe Maddon in Sunday’s finale against the Mets.

Jeimer Candelario will wear No. 7.

The Cubs placed OF/INF Chris Coghlan on the 15-day disabled list with a right rib cage injury.

Updated 12:34pm CDT – Cubs officially placed outfielder Chris Coghlan on the 15-day disabled list with a right rib cage strain and recalled infielder Jeimer Candelario from Triple-A Iowa.

With Sunday’s roster moves, the Cubs active roster consists of 25 players, 13 pitchers (five starters, eight relievers) and 12 position players. The Cubs 40-man roster stands at 40 players. Candelario was on an optional assignment with Triple-A Iowa.

After an overdue promotion to Triple-A Iowa, Jeimer Candelario has excelled at the plate. Candelario stuck with the process that was not producing numbers for Double-A Tennessee and it paid off with the I-Cubs.

In 25 games with Triple-A Iowa, Candelario hit .333/.452/.600 with seven doubles, two triples and three home runs for a 1.052 OPS. Candelario had 14 walks and 18 strikeouts in 75 at bats.

While with Double-A Tennessee, Candelario hit only .219/.324/.367 with 17 doubles, a triple and four home runs for a .690 OPS. In 81 games in the minors this season between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa, Candelario hit .249/.359/.428 with 24 doubles, three triples and seven home runs for a .787 OPS.

Chris Coghlan has gotten on-base in 19 games with the Cubs, but not hit much and made very little hard contact. Coghlan is hitting .194/.356/.306 with two doubles and a triple for a .661 OPS.

Joe Maddon is throwing Candelario into the mix right away. Candelario is batting sixth and starting at third base for the Cubs in Sunday’s finale with the Mets.

Cubs batting order: Ben Zobrist 2B, Jason Heyward CF, Kris Bryant RF, Anthony Rizzo 1B, Willson Contreras LF, Jeimer Candelario 3B, Javier Baez SS, David Ross C, Jon Lester P
